Ok, then: books for DIYers

Ok so I was asking a lot in my last post, lol.

Instead, could you all point me to books for DIYer pond builders? We plan on lining our 20 X 30' earth pond. We have no idea where to start or what to expect and would like to know any sources for newbies.

Hello Newbie & Welcome!
You can find most of the info you need by either Searching within this forum for what you want ie...pond building, pond liners, new pond, etc...if you use specific words you will be more successful! Second choice is google. Same concept, specific words will garner more info, pond building, pond liners. Third, go to your local library or search this forum for pond books.
There is an excellent post, if you search, by drevalvo who also wanted a pond. There are several good answers, one being from loma_ponder, about some considerations.

Hi Tim, Good to see you posting on the Cutting Garden. It has been rather quiet on the forum lately. We thought about you during the fires last season. Glad you have been getting some rain. Here in the Upper Midwest it is much too cold. I guess that is to be expected late in December. I have no idea where fall went. We were selling bouquets at the market; and, the next thing I knew we had an enormous amount of snow. BTW I did receive your email. You should have received my reply. We wish you and your family peace and health as you celebrate this holiday season. Your friends in Michigan.

One problem with buying and not trying is that if there is a flaw in the product, you won't know until well into the warranty period or the free return period. Ask the seller about this? Also want to share (again) my story of buying ahead--two cast iron sinks on the Black Friday sale in fall '09 and not installing until summer '10. Moving those heavy boxes around was a real problem. They were always in the way and this was a single worker project so DH had to move them alone frequently. We have classic cars in our garage also. Or in the neighbor garage, if we need our garage for mundane things like table sawing, customizing steel siding segments with a breaking machine, storing materials like windows, little things like that. You will want to clear out sufficient garage space that the old cars don't slow down the work pace. Otherwise, you're going to be even slower than you will probably find yourself to be anyway. Add months to your expected date of move-in, just in case. Then, if you work faster than that, you can congratulate yourself and have a party.

marti I REALLY sympathize with you. Although we did not totally DIY, my DH gutted the apt. and worked with a general handyman who is skilled in basic plumbing/tile/electric-while we are living here. When we were doing the bathroom I was losing it. I had no toilet no bath. I had to wash my hair in the kitchen sink and go to a (fortunately the neighbor owns it)local lotto/smoke shop to use the back toilet. We were living w/o walls/ceilings/plywood floors in 500sq ft. total. We stopped and started the work so that it slowed us down and our friend the handyman IS SLOW. If we had the $$$ we would have moved out but rents are so high... Now we are working on the kitchen and I have no sink. All of the kitchen is in boxes or a storage center. On Easter I was attempting to squeeze lemons by hand with no glass juicer for the lamb marinade. But I had no need to cook the last few days so that worked out ! Someone here suggested setting start & stop times, good idea ! My DH carried in 15 pieces of sheetrock(up 2 flights) and all the molding at 8:30pm one night---not a good idea. And he asked me to hold the 10 pack of 9ft. molding above my head while he grabbed it from the 2nd fl. window. Can I tell you if I hadn't screamed for help the molding would have crashed through the neighbor's window...and maybe killed their dog. not happy. no I was not. I've cooked through it all b/c if we don't eat, things get even worse...if that's possible. That way we have enough energy if we need to have a fight. I make things that provide lunch & dinner and alternate between 2 dishes for variety such as black beans and tomato meat sauce or chicken stew. On the in between days I stir fry vegetables/steam fish or cook lentils or split peas with pumpkin(fast) and serve with brown rice/spinach. I try to add as many vegetables as possible to what ever I cook--Stress slows your digestion so the more vegetables the better.. If I make vegetable/cheese omelette I make double so I can have it for lunch w/ a salad I cook a lot of things in the same pot-when rice or pasta is almost done I toss in peas or spinach or sauteed garlic. When I'm desperate I go to the butcher for shoulder lamb chops and grill them on a cast-iron grill. My toaster oven has received a work out too--I love grilled mozzarella/tomatoes and could eat that for lunch most days. As far as keeping up with bills--things get lost so easily when your environment is disrupted. SO EASILY ! I cannot believe it. As soon as a bill comes in I take the cash out and pay it the next day(I pay utilities/credit card in cash). If I didn't do this I would wake up at 3am. EVERY NIGHT. Keep your spirits up, make sure you rest, we are all here to listen to you :)

Hi Weekend warriors! Sending jumbo aspirin, margaritas (or your chillin' libation of choice), and lots of encouragement to you all this extra-day-to-make-progress weekend! Greenhaven, thanks for the horse house pics, I missed them last time I stopped by. I assure you your horse doesn't care about level or plumb NEARLY as much as carrot pieces or a can of sweet feed! Here's a pic of my horse years ago. Y'all, I TRIED to make progress, this week. I TRIED to order my commercial porch rail, but the guy quoted me 8 foot sections and I need/want 6 foot sections, so I have to get a re-quote. I have narrowed down the product and fasteners for the project, though. (Marine grade, I'm into buy it good enough to last.) I also TRIED to order supplies to renovate my hardwood floor and then was called by the vendor. Turns out they won't ship gallons of the stuff to my state, only quarts and I didn't want this. Cancelled that order and will re-think the plan. Sometimes, DIY is full of potholes and obstacles! But we trudge through with full determination. And in the end, we have much more respect for ourselves, because we prevailed! Enjoy your long weekend, everyone!

Thank you both!

I'm hoping to get a single comprehensive source, ie- book, as I'm very new to this, one that covers a lot from start to finish. Then, I can use sources such as this site and Google to elaborate or fill in on the details or anything left out.

I can't recommend a book but as with any major project, you have to start at the higher level first: 1) Ask yourself what kind of fish you want- if goldfish and minnows then you don't need to be too deep and filtering doesn't have to be too powerful and you can keep plants everywhere in the pond; if Koi, you probably want 3'+ deep in some parts, very good mechanical filtration + bio and probably segrated places for your plants or some way to protect the tops of the pots from having the gravel/soil dug out.

2) Now you know how deep and what sort of filtering you need, do you want a waterfall or stream?

Keep going till you have decided what you want to do with the pond. Then get into detailed planning about landscaping, where you want the waterfall, how to build it, pick your filtering system(s), etc. Once you know how much water and how high you have to push it, then you pick your pump. One other decision is submerged pump or external etc.

Don't forget the bottom drain etc.

I have a whole shelf full of books and info I printed out from this and other forums. The best general interest books with the best tried and true info will be by Helen Nash and Peter Robinson will be at the top of the list as well. You won't go wrong with any of their books but as I have found out, no one can put everything into one book which is why I have a dozen binders with info on some very esoteric subjects and I keep missing a snippit here and there. I think I must be OC. Sandy

The original poster wants an EARTH pond.....not a liner pond. I am afraid all the books mentioned deal with liner ponds, which are totally different. I would start looking in the direction of aquaculture or farm ponds. I think there was a great farm pond web site once, but I don't know the address.

"We plan on lining our 20 X 30' earth pond" This a quote from his post. IMO that means he already has an "earthpond". Now he is wanting directions on 'how' to convert it to a lined pond. Correct me if I'm wrong. Glenda
