Anybody have a shallow pond/dry creek bed?

I'm missing my koi pond from my old house but in the new place, there really isn't a great spot for a large pond.

I'm thinking about digging a small water feature like a recirculating stream with a small catch basin area that will be good for wildlife to drink from. I want to make this shallow enough though so that I can empty in out in the fall making it look like a dry creek instead of just a hole in the ground covered in ice.

I'm not going to plant it with lillies or put fish in, maybe I'll add some bog type plants. I've looked at the dissapearing waterfalls but I don't want to mound up my yard. I have an area with a slight slope but mostly what I'm thinking of is just a small shallow pond with recirculation water.

Anybody have something similar, pictures, ideas? I have a 10x10 piece of liner to work with.

Thanks!
