Ponds in the upper midwest

I'm wondering how ponds in the snowy cold upper midwest are surviving. Especially the smaller 500-700 gallon variety? Has it been a struggle to keep the ice open?

Last summer was going to be the summer my pond was finished and the fish moved outdoors for good & spend the winter outside, but then other repair & remodeling issues got in the way and the fish are still in their basement tank.

Now I'm wondering if I should re-think the thing about overwintering them outside? I wonder- is there a limit to how long fish can hibernate - I mean its one thing to be dormant and not eating for 2 months, but 5??? One time I left my fish out until late December and they were noticeably skinny and that was only about a month & 1/2 of water temps in the 40s.
