Waikin Goldfish for smaller pond

This is a duplicate message. I am posting on this Forum in addition to the Koi, in hopes the greater exposure might increase the chances of a reply.

I live about 40 miles south of Chicago, and am seeking to buy about 8 young, nice quality Waikin, but so far, haven't been able to find a seller within about 150 miles; close enough to allow me to go to choose and pick up my fish, and return home in one day.

I'm hoping to attend the Pond Expo in Crown Point, IN next month, as it's a farily short drive for me, but I've been told that all I'll find there is Koi; not that I won't admire and desire the Koi, but I simply haven't a place to keep them properly.

Given the space for a large enough pond to support as well as winter mature Koi, I would love to have them, but I haven't and quite admire Waikin too, and can house them properly.

www.fishsempai.com has Wakins 10 for $125.00 I paid that much plus shipping for just 1 Wakin. I think that is a bargain. The pictures of them are beautiful. Although I haven't ordered from them. I have ordered many fish over the internet and have had good luck with all of them.

Thank you for your response, but I've already checked that site. The price is now $200.00, or $20.00 each plus shipping, but I would pay twice that amount per fish to be able to choose my own indivdually, as opposed to buying more than I want or have space to keep- sight unseen.

Perhaps I may make a connection at the Pond Expo, or another Wakin breeder will have individual fish to sell online later in the season. I don't object to paying for shipping, but I'd as soon put the money into the fish.

No bass, but in 2004, the first year we had our pond, while my boys and I were out canoeing in a local lake they scooped up a bunch of unknown fry that were schooling around in the shallow water. Not sure exactly how many they had in the bucket, but I would guess over a hundred. We took them home and dumped them into the pond, they looked nice schooling around in there, but the turtles immediately went to work thinning them out. Within a couple weeks the school was pretty much gone and there really wasn't much hope for the few remaining stragglers that by now had learned to spent most of there time hiding. But, just as things happen in the wild the fittest survive and two of those fry managed to survive and grow large enough for us to be able to tell what type of fish they are, and along with the goldfish and one koi we now know we have one perch and one pumpkinseed sunfish. Both are useful for keeping the goldfish population under control and add to the variety and interest of the pond as a whole.

I agree, wait a bit. In my little pond I prefer to see a few thriving pretty fish than a mass of babies I can only hope to find homes for.... I started with tons of plants and then had to add a second small 275ga pond, a 150ga stock tank and a 60ga veggie filter cause I couldn't see the fish for all the plants! I now have 2 dwarf lilies, 3 anacharis, and ~ 6 or 7 potted marginals in my 300ga pond. My how they grow! But each spring I am tempted to get more...'til they fill in. 'Course plants are easier to find homes for. Have fun! PS: Provided your aquariums are healthy I don't see that adding rocks or fake plants can hurt, but the beneficial bacteria in an aquarium may not survive in the 'real' world. Temp flucuations, sun, shade, etc. So I don't know if it'll help either. But I've never done it and I've been known to be wrong :0)

I can't find the thread either, but I posted on it. I have used a landing net to scoop out goldfish while they're eating, but they're onto me now and lay low. The koi swim right into the net because they've never had anything to fear from it. When the goldfish are spawning, which is almost constant, they'll try to hide in pipes or other submerged "holes", and sometimes the males will go in after them. You might rig some kind of trap with that in mind. Mine went into the 4-inch siphon pipe and got sucked to the little settling pond, where they'll remain throughout the summer. When I drain that pond in the fall I'll give them away.

I went through a similar experience after purchasing goldfish from and on line vendor but they were being held in quarantine in a 400 gallon pond when they started displaying nearly the same symptoms and resulting death. I determined that my fish were suffering from some unknown parasite. I used Proform C which is a broad spectrum malachite green & formalin treatment which will eliminate nearly all parasites that afflict goldfish or Koi. Read the directions carefully and treat your whole pond three times doing water changes between treatments. Worked wonders for me and came very highly recommended at that time. I tried salt myself and they still kept dieing since salt is only effective for a few parasites why waste your time. Once treated as prescribed you will not need to drain the pond since all parasites should be eliminated. It is important to have a fairly accurate knowledge of the volume of your pond. One quart will be enough with plenty to spare. Let us know how it all is resolved. I was so happy that I quarantined these fish and not released them into my main pond of 8000 gallons with many other fish until I determined they were healthy and free of parasites.

When I went in on that website the first time it was 10 for $125 but when I went in again it was $200. Canadian money, which would be less American, but I don't know the rate of exchange. Hope you can find what you are looking for locally. Glenda

It's now going to be a Koi and Goldfish show so hopefully there will be Wakin.

"The Northern Midwest ZNA Club would like to announce their Koi Show is moving from Chicago to Indianapolis to be held June 30-July 1, 2007. The show will take place at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in the Our Land Pavilion. This year it will also include a Goldfish Show and we will have a Pond Expo of various vendors. Within a few days from now we will have vendor registration and show entry forms on our website. The Show chairs are Dick Thomas and Chester Bailey. The Pond Expo Coordinators are Marc and Tamara Skaggs. We will announce judges and hotel information soon.

It had previously been posted that the show was moving to Crown Point, but nothing was set in stone yet. Indianapolis will be the location of the show; we have contracts now.

The Frog Bog in Verona Wis. (near Madison) has had waikins in the past, he usually gets his fish in later in spring but you could call to see what he'll have this yr. - 608-848-3200 May be a little far for you to travel though.

Bonnie: Well, that's a disppointment. Yes, I can round trip Indy in one day, and have done so. Ditto Madison, but it's a haul, and would leave me with very little time to stay to enjoy the show.

I doubt that I would make the trip only on the hope of finding Wakin for sale there, but would if I knew for sure there would be. I'll contact them and see if they will be listing their vendors in advance.

I'll contact the person at the Frog Bog too.

If all else fails, I'll buy from the Wakin Works, even if I have to settle for only a few to start. I suppose that considering the cost of installing a well made and equipped pond, the cost of the fish will be the least of it, even if they end up quite pricey- for goldfish.

Too many trips to Japan are doing me in. I want what I saw there. LOL!

One vendor will DEFINATELY be selling Wakin at the show.

BTW hotel is cheap so why not spend one night there so you can enjoy the show?

I got my wakins from fishsempai two years ago. Andrew emailed me a picture of the selected 10 first before shipping. I asked for some white/red, plain red/orange and more orange with a little white. My favorites are the white ones with a little red. The fish were shipped by air and all arrived safely. I lost one the first year to using the submersible pump--think it got trapped under it but the rest are all fine and spawned last year.

I wrote to the people at Wakin Works. Hopefully, they will sell based on photos of individual fish. If so, I hope to get the fish I want, in the number I can comfortably house. I really don't want more than 8.

birdwidow, are you still here? Did you get some Wakins? Have you seen the Candycanes? Anyone on the forum have any? I just saw them and I think they are pretty. Glenda

I have heard many good things about Wakin Works.

Personally, considering that Wakin are goldfish that breed like rabbits as any other goldfish I think the prices in general are ridiculous. I would never spend that kind of money on a fish. However, many do and are very happy about it.

Some find Wakins at unlikely places. I saw a picture recently of some saved from a feeder tank.

I saw some at the koi show here two years ago and the guy wanted $50 each for 4" fish!
