The closing date on the house is finally almost here. We've decided (I think--I reserve the right to change my mind!) to maintain the chlorine pool until we have a better idea of potential problems and questions.

Including, will we be able to swim in the pond--is the water safe enough, how do we determine that?

Will we (or someone) be able to return it to a swimming pool later if they would rather that? And if they do, what steps will they have to take?

I would think that ponds could easily be changed to pools and then back again if the person has the money and the inclination to do so.

As for whether a pond is safe to swim in, I can't answer that. There has been some discussion on that subject on various forums, including this one. Personally, I would not want to because of bacteria issues, but I would also point out that people swim in lakes and farm ponds. Occasionally you hear of a bacteria or amoeba that causes a problem, but mostly you don't hear of problems.

Actually, Nancy, the two are starting to coexist. The idea is coming over here from Europe to use a bog/shallow pond with lots of plants to filter swimming pools. It means using no chlorine. Of course, just like everyday life, there is a chance of getting an infection but that can happen on dry land.

I'm in zone 6 but I know there are several ponders here who live in zones 4 and above that have lined water gardens/fish ponds and I don't recall them having problems with the liners in winter.Hopefully one of them will verify this. I would just make sure to research liners thoroughly and to ensure you get a good quality one. Even in Zone 6, the ice here gets thick enough to walk on at least once or twice a winter and I've had no liner damage after 5 years. I'm honestly thinking that perhaps the reason more people haven't responded to your question here (besides the fact that very few people have natural swimming ponds) is that this subject has been brought up before and caused quite a bit of debate-- not about the liner, but about the actual safety of swimming in a "natural" pond. You could try doing a search on this forum for swimming, etc. to see what has been discussed before. The link below is one such thread, but I know there are more "heated" discussions out there as well. The photos I've seen of natural swimming ponds are beautiful and I'd be interested in hearing all the details if you do decide to build one! We converted our pool to a pond (but with no intention of going back again) although ours was an inground unit. While that makes some difference as you can imagine there are other things that remain the same whether it is inground or above ground. First thing: size of your pool/pond to be. If you have, say a 20,000 gallon pool, do you really want to continue to turn over that volume once an hour? Most pools use 1/2 to 3/4 horsepower pump running continuously, although you could get buy with turning them off sometimes (when it was operated as a pool). Not so with a pond IF you intend to have a biofilter/fish. Turning off a pump for long periods of time is a guaranteed way of killing off the biofilter. By reducing our pool to a more manageable pond size we run the whole thing on about 200-250 watts. Secondly, your filters. The filters for your pool are excellent for taking out particles/bacteria - that's what they were designed to do - but they were meant for a relatively low loading. In a pond environment algae grow constantly, which along with bacteria and other things from the pond place a significantly higher loading on the filters. The result will be that they will need to be backwashed much more frequently and therefore your water consumption will go up. Just replacing the innards with some other media may work although you may find you cannot achieve the necessary degree of surface area/volume of biofilter to treat the original pool volume. As to the chemicals or chemical residues: stop adding any algacides and any chlorine/shock/etc. The pool will, within a week or so turn quite green. At that point you will not have to worry about chemical residues. While chlorine (free) does evaporate, chloramines don't evaporate nearly as rapidly and can persist for several days. However, both decompose fairly rapidly upon exposure to sunlight (that's why they add a UV-stabilizer to most chlorine bars/pucks). Aerating the pool while you are thinking of what to do next will help with the inevitable odor problems associated with things going anaerobic if you are not actively circulating the water. There are several different ways you could go at it. If you want to keep it easy to convert back to "swimming pool" and keep the cost down for both factors, here are some suggestions. Leave the color as is, the blue isn't that big a problem with algae and a black swimming pool might not be as easy to sell. Some shade for the pool will help against the algae as well as would having it coated in black. Let the water age to get rid of the chlorine. (What source of water do you have for re-filling if you were to need to do any water changes? If you have city water with chloramine you might need to look into some water conditioner.) What is your existing pool pump/equipment? In some arrangements, you could simply continue using the existing pump/filter. Or you could shut down and drain (like for winter storage the pump and sand filter, if you do this properly, the equipment can be hooked back up when wanted for a pool again.) Then you can get a submersible pond pump and a bio falls basin. Put the pump in the pool and hook up to the bio-falls basin sitting on the edge of the pool and you are set to go for small numbers of fish. Add some aquatic plants (make sure they are in large plant baskets with gravel, no dirt.) Place potted plants around the falls tub to dress it up a bit and away you go. Now this might not turn your swimming pool into a perfect ornamental pond but it is the cheap way to do it. Make sure to choose an energy efficient pump as you will probably be running it 24/7. In warm water you need to keep it flowing or the fish can run out of O2. It is best to start out with smaller numbers of smaller fish and keep the feeding light until the system has stabilized. Now if you want to make it really fancy, it will of course get more complex and costly. If you want large or lots of fish, then you will definitely need to learn more about Aquaponics, bio filtration, fish keeping etc. Here is a link that might be useful: www.TCLynx.com

Well, it is a really fun idea to consider. One suggestion I have is to find out if the critters you want to provide a habitat for are able to reproduce and survive at the depths the pool would provide. For example, do frogs need a shallow area at any stage in their life? I wouldn't be surprised if they can feed better in shallow water. Can you adjust the depth to meet their needs? If you are interested in enjoying some birds that like water (ducks?) they like water that is shallow enough so that they can get to the plants growing on the bottom. I know they eat the plants and would guess they eat some larval insects that live in shallower water. I do have a friend who has a shallow pond maybe 15 inches deep and 10'X 10'. Without a great deal of effort it seems to have achieved a balance that allows everything to survive without any pumps or filtration. She lives in Hawaii and her pond has guppies (little fish she put in), frogs (or toads) that arrived on their own and a number of plants. Her pond has been on its own for years. I saw the pool again. It is not as big as I described earlier, but I still couldn't get to it to measure it. It also appears to be 5-6 feet deep rather than 8. So there's possibly a lot less water. This is looking managable.
It's still cold here and I don't want to start a pond until it's warmer. I did read that some cold plants are possibilities--spinach, broccoli, some lettuces including romaine. Even with the info overload, we're talking and considering what-ifs and how-abouts. We're open to suggestions, and welcome them. TIA!

Ella, you won't be able to keep a pond buffered like you do a swimming pool. That's going to cause the finish on the inside of the pool to deteriorate.
To convert it back to a swimming pool, you will need to re-finish the inside of the pool.

Corrie, why wouldn't you be able to keep it buffered? That is an important part of pond chemistry that we have talked about on this forum often. It is not difficult. I place Plaster of Paris sculptures in my pond and it reacts to maintain the buffering capacity quite nicely. Others use other methods. I don't see how that would harm the inside of the pool.

Not sure how big the pond/pool in question - I've been using a charcoal filter/pump successfully with fish for years - seems like that in combination with scooping out leaves and stuff would work quite nicely with a swimming pond - esp. without fish waste to contend with.

I think there's a range of alternatives you can explore between keeping it chlorinated and chemicalized on one hand, and letting it turn into a smelly bacteria infested mess on the other hand - filtration etc. People swim in lakes all the time - having just wrecked my hair with ONE swim in a chlorine pool recently, I say go for it.
