Any tips for growing Foxtail lily bulb- eremerus
Comments (1)I have one(1)out of ten started about 6 or7 years ago. They all grew the first year, so I am not claiming there was anything wrong with the bulbs. It just was my inexperience with a plant not grown in these parts at all. Wind has not been a problem. The one stem I get every year seems to be strong enough. Although the bulb has grown to where I have more than one crown I still get only one flower stem. It took me several years to realize how far that star fish looking bulb would send roots out from the plant. Now I am very careful to pull the weeds and don't dig them within about three feet from the plant. The roots seem to be only about two inches from the surface. I don't think an easterly exposure will give as much sun as they like. My climate is so much different from yours, I can't comment on that. Al...See MoreWhat is eating my pond lily leaves?
Comments (7)I had a similar problem last year; dime sized holes and for the life of me could not find the culprit. Someone on here said to check the underside of the leaves at the very edge of the holes for glass worms. They are extremely hard to see since they are clear, a magnifier would help and no more than 1/4" long, but they can sure do some damage. As a remedy I removed the most heavily infected leaves and the others I brushed the bottom of the leaves with a soft brush to remove them. Fm4...See MoreWho's been in my lily pond?
Comments (10)I live in an urban area of Kansas City and have plenty of red fox, raccoons & opossums. Only the raccoons seem to bother with the water plants (they seem to be partial to my water iris) and fish. You might try a motion activated light to scare them away. If you try tapping & releasing them, try marshmallows & peanut butter (you do have to take them some distance or they will come back & there are laws in many areas about relocating wildlife). When I rebuilt my pond I made it 3 feet deep with strait sides & no marginal planters convienient to the edge, problem seems to be solved (now if I could keep them from washing this dinner in the bird bath & mudding it up)!...See MoreWhat happened to my water lily?
Comments (3)catherinet, I had water hyacinths in my pond this year for the first time with my water lilly, and it didn't spread like it usually does, it did bloom, but no spreading, I think it was the hyacinths. The water iris I have is not invasive, so it really didn't bother the lilly. I only fertilzie the lilly once in spring with tomatoe spikes in the clay in the pot. It bloomed all summer. I am not placing water hyacinths in the water next year. I'm going to let the lilly spread out a little more. I think they do affect the sun hitting the lilly through the water. I could be wrong, but I did notice a difference this year....See Moredirtslinger2
