The Real Reason Big_Deck is Big_Deck
Comments (14)Against my better judgement, I took off yesterday (6/25) and (almost) finished the sealing of Oscar's Playground. Mrs. No came to my aid about 6:00 when she got home from work, and it was a good thing, as I was one cooked cookie and I can hardly move my hands this morning - I think I have blisters on my blisters! Oscar has still not seen it, but she will this weekend. Time to get out the old manual and finally learn how to use the video camera, as I want to record her reaction to it all! Then the next project will be to get the 9mm video into some useable form for "the rest of us"! Can't believe that it took 10 FULL gallons of seal and I/we still have the exterior side and the exterior back to do, but there is no extreme rush (or interest) to get to it. I think our resident bear is a bit upset as he/she can't cut across it any longer, but just seems to stand and stare from a distance. Total surface area, including the side rails I put up = 3,222 sf, according to a neighbor, who understands how to measure this sort of thing better than I can. Suppose you can call me Mr. Can't Add The Change in His Pockets - of which there is none left! I guess I should not say that it is really completed as there is still a 31" section that is going to be added and the 'entry' to the Turtle Garden. Anyone want to come carry 50 more bags of crush marble? As my neuro-psychologist put it yesterday - "now what are you going to do?" My response - 'just look at it and sigh!'...See MoreWhat are the REAL reasons not to use a sump pump for a pond pump?
Comments (17)Using an inefficient pump is also a problem in green house gas generation. Just like with our cars, even though 4 or fewer cylinders will get you there comfortably, six and eights are preferred. There really is no good reason, but people buy them anyway. Pond pumps are also able to do the job more efficiently than utility or sump pumps, and are designed for the job they do. You can get there real fast and spend a lot on the gas to do that, or you can get there fast enough, and spend half as much on gas. Same with water pumps. You can spend a lot of money to move the water, or you can spend less. You can risk polluting your water with oil, or you can get a safe pump. Any of the primary options creates bigger problems for the planet. I try to live efficiently. And hope others will too, as it is less expensive personally, and more healthy for everyone in the long run. Being able to afford to do something wrong, doesn't make it right. If you can't find the right way to spend your money, give it to someone that can. Oh, in the interest of full disclosure, I am not perfect, that is god's business. I am simply trying to be excellent! (Though still FAR from that!) I smoke, I drink, I use weed killer, I use bug killer, I drive a car, I have an OLD septic system, I have some incandescent light bulbs, and I have a chlorinated swimming pool. But, I smoke and drink less than I used to. I follow the directions on the killer cans, and use them now as a LAST resort, I drive a car that gets 38 mi/gal, have compact florescents in my most used fixtures, and want to convert the pool to a pond, just couldn't sell the Mrs. on it. Yes, I have a long way to go, but I am better now than ever, and encourage others to try to improve as well. Little bits here and there from everyone, ad up to big bits that are good for everyone. So please, use the most efficient pump you can. -TT -TT...See MoreWorm Tower: Any Real Reason To Do This?
Comments (2)I do something like that with a galvanized trash can with a tough to open lid. It allows me to compost my kitchen waste outdoors. I have to use a rodent proof compost bin for kitchen waste or I have to throw it away........city ordinances. I've never had luck with a worm bin inside. You do what you have to do to keep the compost police happy. At least they don't mind open bins for lawn and garden waste and they do promote home composting....See MoreAny reason not to use Silestone Leather series in bathroom?
Comments (5)I have something similar in my kitchen. It is a honed color of Caesarstone, another quartz countertop. I really like the look, and I would choose it again. My color has since been discontinued, but it was a golden tan that was supposed to mimic limestone. Pretty similar to the Tigris Sand, actually. The issue with the oil is real. You do need to work harder to get oil/grease off. It would be the most noticeable if your countertop gets direct sunlight. Mine doesn't, and I only really notice it if the light is just right. Doesn't bother me, but I'm not the most meticulous housekeeper. Still, I dislike the cold, shiny look of granite, and I would not have chosen it had I not been able to get it honed. It looks much warmer and softer to me that way. I agree with live wire oak: get a sample and see....See Morepnbrown
