What would eat calla lilies and strawberry leaves?
Comments (2)If the lilies look like they've been chomped from the top (esp. the flower buds just chopped off and disappeared) I'd suspect deer. I'm not sure about calla, but they love Asiatic lilies. Strawbery leaves? Again, if they're totally gone not just holey, it might be deer. Though if you've got a lot of grass around I don't know. But deer did eat my strawberry leaves late last fall before I had mulched. I'd assume that they'd have plenty else to eat in the spring though since they haven't touched mine since I took the winter pine bough covering off....See Morewhat's ripping the leaves off my water lilies?
Comments (4)thanks for the input......i have installed some wire cages. im hoping this will break the habit of this destructive creature. a local water lily grower also mentioned raccoons and even black bears have been known to destroy the leaves in local garden ponds. now im hoping its a raccoon. Comments (2)Let the remaining stem and leaves go dormant just like the rest of you lilies and they will be just fine for next year. In fact, they will be larger and have more flowers than the others--all because they didn't flower this year. Flowering is very stressfull and these now will be able to put all their energy into making a larger bulb for next year....See Morewhat animal eats lily flowers and leaves?
Comments (27)Just so everyone knows, daylilies - Hemerocallis species and hybrids - are not lilies despite that common name. They are not bulbs like true lilies (Lilium species and hybrids) but just a fleshy rooted perennial. But the buds and flowers can be browsed by various plant eating creatures just like true lilies and a host of other perennials and shrubs. In my garden with a moderate deer presence, the deer will often eat the flowers or flower buds off of just about anything, even for plants they normally avoid. So my vote would be deer damage....See Moredenisew
