what's garlic cheese? I know what grits are..a kid in one of my classes showed me how to use them for paste if I was ever in a pinch but I've never heard of Kraft garlic cheese and have never seen it any of the stores. Do you think it's only South of the Mason Dixie?

I know how peeved you are Janis. This phenomenon has been happening to me at my own markets, and yes! I called the companies and complained as well. Now, the folks at my usual market lied to me about one of them. The manager looked me right in the face and told an untruth. I had done my homework, however, and had already checked with the manufacturer and they DO STILL MAKE IT. That was the good old fashioned Puss N Boots cat food. I found out that my old tom cat can eat it, and ONLY it and not suffer from his megacolon. Just when I had him feeling good, the store stopped carrying it. It's half the cost of the candy butt new cat foods, and is a Godsend to people who can't afford gourment stuff for their pets. I found a local IGA who carries it, however.

Ditto Moist 'N Meaty dog food in the large box. I was told they'd quit making the super sizes (well unless you want to shop at the ***** club, and I don't 'cause it's part of you know who and I don't shop there). I also protested strongly.

Then the market quit carrying the only processed baked good I will buy and that is the Pillsbury rolls with orange icing. I also found that at the IGA. So, I think after twenty years, I may just change markets.

I really feel for you, Janis. Some things are sacred.

I've never heard of it, let alone actually let this ersatz Garlic Cheese pass my lips. I'm sending Kraft a thank you letter for clutching you from the jaws of plastic cheese. You know it stays in the landfill for centuries.

Kraft did make a cheddar garlic in a block, brick, whatever you call it, alas, it has been discontinued also. I'm telling you, this is a direct attack on all things southern.

Marda you can glue steel with grits, they're good for everything.

Grits is somethin' you just don't "get" unless you've done your stint in the south. My poor Mama broke her teeth on some grits. LOL. She had this bad habit of putting stuff in other containers. Well, she poured some grits into an oatmeal box, and my sis and I decided we'd surprise her and bake oatmeal cookies. I must've been really little, and my sis not much bigger but we could read, and made up the dough, baked it, and she took a big bite and broke a tooth. Of course good old fashioned hominy grits aren't 'instant' nor soft like oats.

I don't know if you can even order Amish cheeses. I'll check. If not, a store isn't going to be too far. Our local Amish store closed when that particular sect of them moved out of the area. I'll check. But if you can't order it, I meant it, I'd get some for you and ship it.

Janis, I sent you an email. I have shopped at this store and the cheeses are authentic and good. This one does web business, most of them don't for obvious reasons.

Ummm. Get a 6 ounce package of Velveeta and stir in ¼ teaspoon of dried garlic powder. I've been told you can't tell the difference.

Otherwise, check recipes for moretum, which is the original form of garlic cheese.

That's not the only thing that wrong with food today. Have you noticed the mayonaise that's in a squared-off plastic container?

How on earth can you send the kids to the store for a jar of mayo? What do you say? "Get me a plastic box of mayo?"

I don't know. I think the crisis here would be if pimento cheese was discontinued. I've never seen Kraft garlic cheese (if that's what it could really be called. Note that the package Marda posted says "pasteurized process cheese food." This is what DH would call "the cheese for when there is no cheese.), however pimento cheese which is also in the category of what I call unfortunate food seems to be an essential ingredient for appetizers everywhere around here.

You know Andie, I picked up on that 'cheese food' label too. It seems to be applied to all processed American cheese. I prefer the other cheeses, but still use American cheese for certain things and Kraft does make a decent one compared to most. I bought a really cheap generic pack because that's what I use to pill my old dog. The gooey cheese wraps around the pills and he eats it right down. But the cheap stuff doesn't melt!

I picked some peppers from my garden and stuffed them with Spanish rice and topped it with those buggers and put them under the broiler to melt the cheese. It DOESN'T EVEN MELT! Four perfectly square, stiff pieces of 'cheese food'. LOL

the square mayo jars bother me too, aileen. some of the international coffees come in those type containers too. then they tell ya to use 3TBLS. heck, you cant even get a tablespoon in there. i have wasted sooo much coffee trying to get out 3 tblsp., it isnt even funny.....maybe that's the idea....use faster, buy sooner...

I had bad dreams last night about this Garlic Cheese fiasco.
I was going to every store I could find looking for Kraft
garlic cheese roll because I HAD to have cheese grits for
dinner. Lord luv a duck, what a night.

Meldy, I've made the grits with garlic powder when I was visiting yankee cousins and they requested them, it just wasn't the same. That old cheese roll (previously put out by Kraft) was just the right thing when you added cheddar to it.

Suzy, I still have to make mac & cheese with Velveeta & it's processed cheese at its worst. Still, I guess it's one of those childhood comfort food things. It also melts really well making it great for queso & things like that.

As to pilling the dog, it's the absolute best. We have to give our dog daily pills for epilepsy & all we have to say is "cheesy cheese" & pull out the yellow Velveeta box & he's ready to chomp the pills right down.

But, even more often, for a broccoli dip.

I have switched about 552 non-broccoli-eatin'-kids to broccoli-eatin'-kids with this dip.
