animals and my wine barrels

well. to follow on,with my rainwater and goldfish// animals and my fish.

they only trouble i have had with with fish has been kookaburras.

i used to have a heron come now and then but since i have 2 mini foxies( and they do not like intruders) he left soonish.

i have had these wine barrels about 1 years left open(maybe being foolish i never gave it much thought) but then we had 2 baby kookaburras visit 1 day and since we feed all other birds we just added them to the list (we had other kookaburras feeding occasionally as well, no trouble)

i asked my hubby if he thought kookaburras ate fish and he remarked he did'nt think so, only the ones that you saw on the rivers ate fish, so i left it at that..

one weekend i saw 1 in the tree with something orange in its beak, and yes by the time i did the count it had eaten 6 out of 15. holy crap.

i love feeding birds, but that NOT what i had in mind.

i now cover the barrels with large aviary wire and black bird netting on top of that, UGLY , i know but it works,

when we get the new pond we intend to cover it with sturdy rigid aviary wire painted black. black is good at least you can see throught it. NO CHOICE i am aftraid, the kookies still look longingly at it , but thats all.And no we do not have problems with kangaroos, too far in the suburbs i am afraid.

It is so cool to have an Australian ponder on our forum. Your plan to keep the kookaburras out of the pond sounds good, although I admit I will have to google kookaburras.

I think you will get more responses on the discussion part of our forum as the gallery is the picture portion. So please post some more info and pics about your pond. Sounds very interesting.

When you build your larger pond Mazela, you can set the mesh a few centimetres below the water surface so it isn't so noticeable. I have done this with a previous pond, but used welded mesh instead of wire.

I went outside and took a look at my barrel, just to imagine what i would do with all those sticks. I would use an old ugly plastic pot, cut the bottom out and bury it in the dirt, then fill it with soil and 'plant' the sticks in it all around the edge to ..kinda... Form the same shape as the barrel originally was. I would intentionally leave spaces between some of the sticks, leave some crooked even. I would line it first with chicken wire, then moss and dirt, like a topiary. I would top it with an upside down tomato cage and do the same to it. It may be necessary to wire it tight to shape. And it would certainly be labor intensive to make, but imagine it planted with a sedum, or several different types of sedums hardy to your zone, or whatever succulants are. Plants tucked into the spaces between the sticks.

hi all the little green bits in there are a floating plant thats actually a weed here, but the fish love it and eat all the roots, in summer it can overtake a pond quite quickly so lots of mulch for the garden then. cheers mazela\ps , thanks for the tip troy, but why the href link instead of the img ??

Yeah, you're right Renee, I'll just throw them out...DH never liked them anyway. He is a winemaker - he thinks their only purpose should be for aging!! I removed some rosemary from 3 pots the other day (actually I had to break the planters to get them out)....I'll save them for you. You won't even need to plant them - they are nice and compact and already shaped like a pot!! heh heh Tressa

In zone 7 you are not all that limited - dwarf conifers, dwarf Japanese maples, many smaller shrubs and pretty much any perennial you like. A variety of perennials are evergreen or very nearly so - hardy euphorbias, hellebores, heucheras, bergenia. All of these look good in winter/early spring and you can fill in with color spots of pansies or primroses and swap out with other annuals later in the season.
