There's nothing much you can do about it at this time. When you do a renovation, you can expect to see lots of weeds germinate. You're providing perfect conditions for germination (you have to, or your lawn wouldn't sprout) and there's no way to do that for just the grass.

Wait until next year to deal with the weeds. Some will die during the winter and you can use pre-m for the spring and summer weeds and weed killer for any that still live.

You didn't say what you seeded, but if it's a spreading grass, by next fall, there won't be any room for the weeds.

Hi, the same thing happened to me i think you just have to look after the grass until spring then hit them with weed killer, I am goign to spot spray my weeds but you mgith need soemthign else as you have a few more than me. Dont kill them now or it could affect the grass. Hopefully after they die in spring the grass will fill in, then you can reseed any bare patches in fall. Ive learnt it takes a few seasons to get a good lawn.

Creeping Charlie / Ground Ivy

That'll spread.

In the first picture the weed looks like common mallow to me based on how it's growing, but with the amount you have in the second picture it could be ground ivy. The two look similar and are frequently confused.

The way to tell the difference is when you pull common mallow it's one plant that comes up with a small thin tap root. Ground ivy grows along a vine-like stolon. If you pull it and it doesn't come up with a root, try pulling it more carefully and with a finger near the base try and see if there's a stolon moving around as you pull. If you get your finger under it and pull up the stolon and a whole row of the leaves. Where the grass is thin and soil loose I've pulled up ground ivy that has been about 2 feet long.

Ground ivy also has square stems while common mallow has rounded stems. I think I read that common mallow also spreads by stolons but still has a straight taproot at the nodes where ground ivy just has thin roots. I've never seen that myself but that might be because I usually pull them when I see them and it hasn't started spreading yet.

If it's ground ivy, I read a blog post earlier this year on how to remove ground ivy using a thatch rake and the techniques helped. This fall I used a thatch rake to prepare for overseeding and it took up all the ground ivy easily and most of the dutch white clover. Even some other weeds.

If it's ground ivy, you might want to hit that area with a thatch rake once the new grass plants are well established. Probably in the spring.

I've been away from this thread because it seemed the common consensus was that I really shouldn't take any action this fall, however, now I'm a little more concerned. We have had a warm fall in Jersey and this weed is growing like crazy. Here is pic from above:

As you probably see, it is now taking up 10-15% of the lawn. In some patches, it is completely crowding out the grass.

Each plant has a single tap root. I looked at other pics online and it definitely looks like common mallow. Thanks for the ID.

I noticed that it is very easy to pull up. Should I start to be concerned about how prolific it is right now or will the lawn still overcome it in the spring? Should I start pulling?

I believe that I have ground ivy. I'm gonna hit it with a broadleaf herbicide as soon as it frosts and my grass goes to sleep for the winter.

Weeds must be 'actively growing' in order for a herbicide to work, so that means when the grass is also growing too.

If you until dormancy to spray you'll just be wasting money.

Fall is the best time to kill winter annual weeds - it prevents them from going dormant over the winter and then reawakening in spring.

Get yourself some Quinclorac in Weed B Gone. Purdue U states it is safe to use 30 days after the grass germinates.

Can't say for sure without knowing where you live, what type of grass you own, what you're trying to hit and hit with what - fertilizer or herbicide since you are not the original poster/question. It's gets too confusing for myself.

Why not start a new thread and start from the beginning giving more information?
