Comments (8)I love the leafless ones too. Three suggestions: Dend delacourii - totally leafless in winter. Just starting new growth now and will bloom during the summer. Flowers last a long time and the plant is really small. Dend hercoglossum - Doesn't go totally leafless, but does drop most of its leaves. It's a very sprawling plant - almost vinelike, but you can figure out some sort of support for canes to keep it a bit more tidy. It's blooming now on the leafless canes. Flowers last a good amount of time. Dend harveyanum May or may not go totally leafless, but does seem to drop most. The flowers are just wonderful and appear before the new growth starts. Comments (30)I keep all my orchids outside all year, but I would like to get one of the shelf systems like whitecat has. My problem is getting protection from too much sun. I have most of them on the NW and SE sides of the house (The house is on a 45 diagonal to true north with NE front), and then I put them under a shelf for protection. I need to build more shade for them, if I want to get any more of them. The perifery of my pergola is filled with cymbidiums and various bromeliads, but the cymbidiums have not been good about blooming. I wonder if they have too much shade or maybe pots that are too big. The leaves are very healthy, and so maybe I just need to be patient. Phalaenopsis burn very easily from too much sun, and the new growth will rot if water is left on top of it. I think you already know this however. I have two Phals that just finished blooming and one that is about to start again. I have the best luck with oncidiums in my climate, it seems, but I have epidendrums all over my yard like everyone else. They do very well in hanging pots that I hang in my apple tree.
