What does that tag say? Can't read it in the pics. It may help id the plant fully.

The new growths do look like keikeis - they're probably the plant's last attempt to propagate. The plant is overpotted - it probably shouldn't be in a pot larger than 4". Overwatering (due to the size of the pot) has most likely resulted in the decline and I bet that the plant doesn't have any roots. From the picture it doesn't seem to be getting enough light (but perhaps it gets more light earlier in the day?).

The good news is that you're in Florida and the high humidity is great. With a little more light it's entirely possible that the plant will recover. Someone from Florida can provide better cultural suggestions, but for now I would stop watering it until you see new root growth at the base and give it a little more light. The leafless canes can still photosynthesize and they will provide any new growth with nourishment.

Your plant is a hard cane/intermediate/phalaenopsis type Dendrobium.
It has declined to the point where recovery if it occurs might take years.

Will it recover? That depends on whether or not there are any growth eyes at the base of the canes/pseudobulbs.

Should be easy to grow in Florida. Outside, getting sunlight filtered by something such as 50% Shade-Cloth or say morning sun for a few hours with protection from hot sun around noon hours.

Might be better to obtain some complete culture notes for a Phal type Den. that relate to Florida and start off with healthy new plant.

Thank you for the information. Unfortunately the tag doesn't say anything other than "dendrobium hybrid". I guess that's what I get for buying an orchid at the grocery store. I'll try and repot it in a smaller pot and give it some more sunlight. Will repotting it hurt the growth of the current keikis?

Nah, it won't hurt them. What are you potting it in? I would use lava rock, especially if you're able to water it often, which you should do if and when new roots start growing. If it has no good roots and hardly any leaves, it will have no way to move water throughout the plant so adding more water or letting it sit in an overly moist pot will be counterproductive. I've found those types of Dends do great in clay pots full of lava rock, in bright light, watered frequently. But hell, you're in Florida, just mount it on a tree!

I think I've discovered the problem (one of them). I went to repot it this morning and discovered that it does have a lot of roots, it was rather pot bound in fact, but the base of a couple of the canes is rather soft. I must have been overwatering it and now the canes are rotting. The roots look much different than the roots on my phals (which are rather healthy) so I'm not sure if its a difference between the two types of orchids or the fact that the den is so unhealthy. Also, there are no aerial roots. Do dens have aerial roots like phals? In addition to all that, I found packing peanuts at the bottom of the potting mix. Is this common? I took some out, but the roots were all enmeshed in the grooves of the styrofoam. At this point I'm just hoping the cane with the keikis survives long enough for them to grow roots so I can start over. I'm rather disappointed that I let it get so unhealthy, but I'm hoping to get another shot with the keikis. Live and learn I guess. You are very observant. Dendrobium roots are very different than phal roots. And dendrobiums don't have the aerial roots that phals have, though their keiki's do throw out roots. They like a lot more sun than phals, and like to dry out after being watered.

Orchids love packing peanuts. They provide quick drainage and air to the roots and keep the roots from sitting in water. The roots even grow through them. I use packing peanuts in the bottom of every pot of all my different orchids.

That looks like a nice, strong keiki. If the cane looks like the soft rot is creeping too close to it, cut the cane off above the rot and plant it in medium. It will take several years for it to grow big enough to bloom. Meanwhile, arthurm's suggestion to start off with a healthy plant is an excellent one.

Leah, how can i tell you that there is little hope that the patient will recover? Put it down to experience that this type of orchid needs more light than a Phal.

Who knows, it may have been doomed before you purchased it and the flowering might have been the last throw of the dice because all the growth eyes at the base of the canes were dead.

How much more light? Well in a different Climate. My Phals are in-door all year plants while the Dens are "Outside" in a glasshouse getting hours of filtered sunlight on the average 300 sunny days a year.
