New Bermuda Installed--need help

I just had 14000 sq. ft of GN-1 Hybrid Bermuda installed in Southern California 6 weeks ago. I live inland and of course the weekend it was installed the temps jumped to mid 90s and have been from 90-108 deg F since. I have kept it pretty wet and did not get it mowed early enough. My gardener just mowed it.....See pictures attached.....looks like he cut it too short?

soil was all new, tilled with lots of compost and was soil tested and treated appropriately. soil was levels, compacted as well.

also, I have read TW's BBible but not so sure how it applies to my SoCal weather.....I know it needs fertilizer now....

which fertilizer should I use?

The Bible applies to any climate, only thing that changes is timing to your local weather patterns.

What I see is classic scalping and/or heat stress. You gardener waited too long and took off too much leaf. Not to worry though it is just cosmetic damage.

If it is still in the 100's there I would not go pushing fertilizer on it until it cools off to the 90's. At that point you want to use a slow release formula with nitrogen only product.

Most important thing right now is to get control of your cutting height. Either you are going to have to get your gardener to mow 2 to 3 times weekly or you will have to do it yourself. Just guessing from the looks of the cut you are using a reel mower? Kind of hard to tell from pictures. Reel is good but comes with a price of very frequent mowing when kept short.

Maintained height is going to dictate cutting frequency. If you are using a reel mower and maintain at 1/2-inch or less is going to require every other day mowing. Get up to 1-inch and you are looking at mowing every 3 or 4 days depending on climate conditions. So work that part out first.

Thanks for the help. Yes, a reel mower is being used. His mower was weak and old though so that may be part of the issue too. We will see this upcoming week. I will have him cut a little higher to avoid the damage and then see what happens. THANKS AGAIN.

Relax guy, no problem Mon. You got new sod laid late in the season, you are going to have weeds so get use to it. Personally I would not worry about the Poa, but if it irritates you spray everything green with Round Up. Just make sure the Bermuda is dormant. In the meantime relax until the end of February. Last week of February or first week of March Apply a product called AMAZE. It is a long half life Pre-Emergence herbicide. Water it in and relax for a few of weeks. Once you are certain all chances of frost have past, get the lawn mower out and scalp the lawn down. I do not mean down to dirt, but enough to get all the dormant brown grass blades cut. Rake up all the debris and relax again for a few weeks until the weather warms up. Once you see some green sprigs of Bermuda growing after it starts to warm up, apply your first fertilizer application using a balanced fertilizer. Go to your local Home Depot and buy some Lesco 20-5-10 or 15-5-10 to do the job. Apply at the proper rate of 5 pounds per 1000/ft2 and water it in. From that point on find the BERMUDA BIBLE and follow the directions and RELAX.

Lilman I looked over your photos, not uncommon what you are experiencing, not is it as bad as you think. What you see is somewhat normal. The tan or dormant grass is drought dormancy, meaning the grass has gone dormant to protect itself from being too dry. It is too dry because it has no roots to speak of to pull water up from the sub soil, and because you have not been keeping it watered enough for the local conditions. If it has been rather warm and windy will suk the moisture right out of the sod even though you have been watering lightly twice a day. Up the water as it is almost impossible to over water new Bermuda sod. You may have to water lightly 4 to 6 times a day. What I suggest is give it a good thorough soaking asap so as to make the ground a bit on the soggy side, then water enough each day to keep the sod good and moist without any standing water. Then when it greens up apply a good balanced fertilizer like 15-10-5 or even some ole fashion 10-20-10 to accelerate root development and start weening off the water. Just be patient and it will be nice thick and green in a couple short weeks. As long as the grass is tan or straw colored you still have live grass. Black or grey is dead.

The bermuda bible recommends a 3-1-2 or 4-1-2 be applied in the March-May period. No it does not say that, at least that is not the intention I was aiming for. The balanced application is to be made for the very first spring application in lieu of a soil test result, and it is one application only per year, All subsequent applications are straight nitrogen. To answer your question from this point on it is straight nitrogen for the rest of the year. Then this Fall I suggest a soil test to see what if anything needs to be done next season. With your application of 10-20-10 this year it is not likely you will need any potassium or phosphorous next season.

There is a gents named texasweed who is a retired sod farmer and lurks the board. I used his method when I had bermuda sod laid twice. It definitely appears to be under watered. I'm not sure it's to late, but maybe he will jump in and give his opinion now. -The area should have been moistened up before the sod arrived. -Once installed, a deep watering to about 6" -Then 2 to 6 times a day (I did 6) moderately to keep soil moist -After 2 weeks, check that the grass is "rooting" by pulling around the lawn. Back off watering to do the first mow. -Then water about 3X's per week in the morning for 2 weeks deeply as you are now trying to drive the roots deeper. -After that, deeply once a week. It worked perfectly for me.
