Unknown perennial or evergreen?

This plant sometimes dies back in the winter and returns every year. If it doesn't die back, it keeps growing throughout winter (winters are usually mild here, and they are protected by the tree and shed that gives the area its shady effect).

It is growing in shade. I have never seen it flower, and it doesn't seem to multiply by any kind of underground propagation. I actually could lose them in this area if I pull them out and don't replant.

I transplanted 2 of them into pots one spring, and they went through a whole 1.5 year's cycle of growth in sunshine and still did not flower. I think this last winter did them in since those 2 in the pots didn't return. I don't remember if the root part was like a bulb or like a rhizome.

The square-ish ending leaves are because the tips may have been dried, or lost in winters. I recall they were pointy at one time.

They are about 8-12" tall and I haven't seen them get taller than that.
