while i was in ely, i walked a new trail to kawishiwi falls. very nice. you might notice the rainbow in the photo.

i took a pic of these tree roots b/c it reminded me of moose antlers

this pic didn't quite get the terrain but here it is.

i haven't looked for the id of these flowers yet.

this flower is really about 1/4 in across. it is blurred probably b/c i was under attack of minnesota's state bird, the mosquito.

i took some video i will eventually load, mostly for the frog music. i have never heard peepers,unless it was chorus frogs, singing the same time of year as grey tree frogs. just shows diffs in climate and how they adapt! there is another frog sound i never heard before and havent' figured it out. that one might be from ontario video.

It doesn't get more beautiful than that! Loved the Moose Antler trees too! :-)

Can people mountain bike through there? Next time you go, I'm coming with you! AWESOME pictures. You could make a brochure for them. It's like we are right there with you.

edweather: I'm with you on the Russets. All the potato dishes I love are far better with them: baked, mashed, French fried, scalloped. The only thing I prefer waxy potatoes for is potato salad. My family loves Russets so much that I used to take them on the plane with me when we vacationed in a cottage on the Florida panhandle. We could never find a decent potato in the little stores down there. (The beef was awful too! We're hopelessly Midwestern.) Of course, Homeland Security put an end to potatoes on the plane. terrybull: According to the sources I've seen (Washington State University, Maine Potato Lady) Nicola is a mid-season variety. Seed Savers Exchange says it is a late season that matures in 90-110 days. I thought late season varieties typically took more than 130 days to mature. Please report back to let us know how yours turn out. I have read that only a few late season varieties will grow stolons with tubers all along the buried stem, which is what you want in a potato tower. Potatoes are like tomatoes in that some are indeterminate and some are determinate. Determinate potatoes flower once and produce one layer of potatoes and die, so they are not suitable for a tower. Indeterminate potato varieties apparently flower continuously throughout the growing season (like yours, edweather?). Most potatoes are determinate. Some potatoes don't actualy bulk up until the weather turns cold. Russet Burbank is a classic indeterminate potato that takes 140-150 days to mature. If I ever do anything like this again, I'm going to look for a potato that takes at least 135 days to harvest. And I think I'll leave it in the ground as long as possible. Whoops. Looks like I'm dreaming again.

brenda, is there a way i can make it easier for you? thanks,all. you would be amazed at how many pics i had to delete b/c of how rarely they stayed still! my camera blurrs uthe image with the motion from the subject. grrrr. haven't figure out a way around that yet, except by doing video. these pics are taken through the glass viewing area at the center. While Ann Cousins does have some fragrance, it is planted in my garden near Festiva Maxima….no comparison! Festiva Maxima has a strong rose fragrance like no other.

If you are doing the judging, you cannot have favourite colours. Lol. I was leading the lay panel (that is the panel of amateurs) used when one of our member AOC judges was not at the meeting. The Catt in question was unplaced in its Class. Just missed out. One of those almost good orchids. The hybrid Paphiopedilum is a much more desirable orchid (in my inexpert opinion).

BRAVO!! Gorgeous pics! We were thinking a motorcycle trip up that way and now you have me convinced.

You really need to submit some of those to the Parade Photo contest, I think you've got some winners in there!

And you can get rid of the date stamp with software, actually a common practice these days (and somewhat controversial when the practice is used to make major modifications, but removing the date would not be considered). It's called cloning in Photoshop and PhotoPlus - I'm not sure what other software offers it. I took the liberty of removing it from one of your gorgeous pictures. It is best done before resizing but see if you can tell in this one ...

amazing, jean! i had no idea. i have been balking at those pricey photoshop programs but one of these days im just going to have to plunge head first. what is photo parade again? sounds familiar.

there is so much to see there, and i didn't even go into the boundary waters.

hop on chicka, but i am far from being in shape for mountain biking! the trails through the farm are virually nonexistant. there is a guide i picked up in ely that told me where it was, which way to walk from the fence to get to the old fishery ponds (where you walk the berm) and to other areas. i didn't go to the other areas b/c man did i have to _____ and it had rained for days- i was already sopping wet. i basically followed the tracks from a quad and when that ran out into the woods, i short cutted through the low wetness where the deer is shown. you ever notice how bad you gotta go when you get out in the woods?

Photo #8 - bottom left flower (white bloom in the dogwood looking cluster) is a Bunchberry

Photo #9 looks like a Wood Anemone maybe.

The next looks like an orchid of some kind.

I still have to search the others.
