I'll try again. This plant has one long branch extending from the side of a stump.

Oh, it's a houseplant! (I just responded to your first post, the one where the photo didn't attach). This looks like the ornamental "corn" plant--

Thank you for the identification. Can you offer any suggestions on what conditions caused the plant to bloom for the first time in such a long period? Is such a long period normal?

I will take the advice and add eyebolts to strategic places on the uprights for tying the canes instead of doing much weaving. If canes get as big as broomsticks, they won't bend much to create horizontals for flowering. Will they form secondary horizontal canes that will flower? Will long canes be limber enough to bend over the top of the arbor without kinking? Thanks again for the advice and compliments on the arbor. It took a fair amount of thought and design but I enjoyed it.

Marauding squirrels is a term often used on the bird forum. As with many things having squirrels is a trade off. This is the time of year when many birds are starting their second nests. I believe it looks like Santa Claus, but has come from a different background, As I have never bought any Santa Claus seeds, I just had a look at what Santa looks like and it is red and white, this seedling has washes of pink running through it, this seedling is a 3rd generation from the seeds that I bought many years ago...Hoping for a seed pod this year, writing a letter to Santa now for my xmas wish lol

as a kid my mom had a potted cactus that was atleast 40 years old her grandma had given it to her. It was a small simple looking round cactus. One day it bloomed, (it didnt set seed, I guess it needed a friend to pollinate with) very soon after it bloomed it died. I always thought that was so bizarre.
