Name That Plant!

ID shrub please?? Some sort of Lilac?

This shrub flowered and had a very lovely fragrance last year. But I trimmed it back last year pretty far and it did not flower this year. I would like to know what it is so I can take better care of it. It has clusters of flowers kind of like a lilac but this one had a light pink flower if I remember correctly. And it smelled great and even across the deck. It has multiple brances from the ground up. Can you please help!

If not a lilac then probably a viburnum.

I don't believe it is a lilac; lilac's don't have serrated foliage. Viburnum might be right.

Ah, you are right of course Ken. I said from the start that we'd have to pull up all five bushes on that side, since they are planted sooo close and they overwhelm our little place. I do hate to hack apart something green and growing, though. Sigh. As for the middle one, it is a small leaf azalea, but it sure is struggling. Looks like some sort of crown/root rot. It is all budded out ready to bloom on the side that is still alive, but the other side is toast.. I could literally yank a section of it up from the root with a good tug. I will have to replace it sooner than later. I'll have to adopt "planting my own future problems" as my new motto, I suppose!

oh, so it is a lilac!! i've done a little reading on preston lilacs and it appears that this gets to be quite a large shrub quite rapidly. i'm so pleased! i liked everything i read about this shrub and i think i might see if i can find another one or two to plant elsewhere in my gardens. thanks so much for responding! jiggreen

1. Lilac Sensation has a picottee edge, so it might be that. 2. I am fairly certain that the second one is a different kind of lilac (Syringa x prestoniae) than the common one (Syringa vulgaris), but the photo is too blurry of the flower itself for me to give any more information. Do a web search for the scientific name and the flower color and you will probably find it.

Oh, I wasn't being critical - just commenting that lots of plant parts can belong to a diverse group of species. Sometimes the features are distinctive enough for a specific ID. Sometimes not ;-). And, yes, I do think that wantonamara was right, and quite polite about it.

It looks like a viburnum. For care, don't cut it back. Once it gets big again, only cut branches that are growing where you don't want them like if one is shooting out sideways from the shrub. If you cut it back because the area isn't large enough to let the shrub get big, I suggest moving it in the fall to a location where it can grow.

Thanks, I cut it back because it just wasn't looking good and it was kind of in the way, by a gate. When I cut some of the branches out at the ground some were full of ants that hollowed out the center. I was hoping to improve it by cutting it....hmmm. My husband thinks it needs to be moved too.
