Bush, Groundcover?? Red heart blooms - NOT bleeding hearts

I have no photo unforunately as I came across this while out and about and didn't have the camera. Is in Loretta Lynn's yard, so didn't want to pick any either.

Not sure if it is a bush or ground cover. Grows in the ground as well as in containers. Green foliage that appears to probably be an evergreen. It is spikey, but the "leaves" are very tiny. Up each "branch" are little red flowers that are heart shaped and drop. They are blooming now, but not sure how long they bloom - just a few weeks, until frost, etc. It is NOT a bleeding heart. The green leaves on these are much, much smaller than the leaves on a bleeding heart. The stalks almost look like a wild grass or a really think yew bush branch. Most of the ones there were 18-24" tall, but no clue if they are mature at this height.

Sorry that I have no picture. If you have these, you'll know what I'm talking about.
