Name That Plant!

Does poison ivy have leaves this big?

I have a tree in my yard with a large vine growing up its side. The vine is about 4-5 inches in diameter. The leaves of the vine are in groups of three. Some of the leaves are very large and some are very small. The small ones resemble poison ivy, but I didn't know that PI leaves grow as big as the large leaves on my vine.

Before I remove the vines from my tree, I wanted to know what I was working with. I have attached photos.

This shows the size of the larger leaves relative to an average male hand.

This is where I cut one of the vines 4 days ago. You can see black goop that the vine produced where I cut it.

Here are some photos of the SMALL leaves that I think might be poison ivy. Some of these smaller vines look like they are coming out of the larger vine.

Any thought about whether any of this might be poison ivy.

Sure looks like it. You can see the aerial rootlets in part of your pictures.

Yes, the leaves can get big in the right conditions.

cut it at the ground .. and apply full strength round up or generic to the cut with the very expensive applicator at the link ... and do it over and over.. whenever you see new sprouts .. use is minimal.. and extremely specific .. and the unused portion can be stored in the original labeled container ... its not a spray thing ... ken Here is a link that might be useful: link

I pulled it up... It isn't poison ivy or creeper... I knew in my gut that it wasn't the former (I am very good at spotting it) but I don't want to take chances anyway. Being able to see it right next to the creeper, I didn't think it was that either. Turns out it is Boston Ivy. Amazing the range of leaf shape BI can take.

Oooh so sorry!!!!! Awful stuff. To ID later... Spray paint pink after the herbicide dries? Take pics? Put a little sign for yourself back there, to remind? Have someone else do it? Pull sprouts more often? Not everything in nature makes sense, but this cruel trick of still poisonous dead leaves and vines is especially perplexing to me. The only acceptable disposal for me, this yard, is plastic bag sent to landfill. We recycle and compost, but that's not an option for something that has the potential to make me so sick for an unknown amount of time past its' death. Do not burn, urishiol can become airborne this way.

Both are quite variable in leaf shape. Hortus III defines them with the same botanical name, Rhus radicans and or R. toxicodendron. Anyway, for sure #2 is poison ivy.

I've seen it that big. You must have nice fertile soil... Seriously, it is poison ivy. Be careful.

Poison Ivy can grow into a small shrub if left unattended.

Thanks to all replies. I thought I would update the forum to say that I have confirmed, via an Accidental Skin Test, that my vine is indeed PI. Despite all my precautions while working to remove the vine, I still managed to get a small rash on the palm side of my wrist. Not too bad; just enough keep me humble.

This stuff can really keep you humble. It grows in profusion on my property. I have found that if I wash my hands with antibacterial soap directly after contact it seems not to infect me. Hope you only have a "touch" of it.
