Breakfast cereal on soil?

I have a half box of frosted mini-wheats that is stale. I'm not fond of them and my kid won't eat them since he got his braces (they hurt his gums). I have a compost pile and I was going to throw them on, but I started thinking about people putting grains and seedmeals directly on their soil as fertilizer. I also figure the frosting side(sugar) would feed the bacterial/microbe growth. Since mini-wheats are simply shredded whole wheat biscuits, should I put them directly on the soil and wait for the rain to water them in? Would the compost pile be better?
