Orchiata source in or close to New York City?

Shipping Orchiata bark by the bag more than doubles the price. Ouch! A local Orchid Society may pool orders and order by the pallet (mixing bark sizes is possible, I understand) - this gives them both the wholesale lower price and much cheaper shipping, so basically half the price, delivered. I am working that angle but it may take a while.

Meanwhile, does anyone know of a good (cheap) local source to buy it somewhere close to here?

It might be worth a call to Hydoponic Garden Center in Queens. It's a little out of the reach by public transportation, but if you have access to a car, it's right on the service road of the Long Island Expressway (westbound). Give a call to see if they have what you're looking for; I've always found them to be really helpful.

Thanks, they do not carry it. Silva Orchids occasionally places a group order, but I missed that one for now, will have to wait at least a couple months, they say, unless I want smaller quantities at double the price. A local orchid society was ordering 45 bags - missed that by 2 days (grrr!) Anyway, this is not hugely urgent, but if anybody knows a source, I'd appreciate it here even when this thread ages.

Thanks for getting the joke, gardengal. It was a pleasure to demonstrate that I can troll my own response better than anyone else can. Of course Sequoiadendron is much hardier. But the problem is it is also much more suspectible to disease caused by our muggy summer conditions. If you were to blend the Mason-Dixon line with the new USDA zn 6/zn 7 line, you would get an approximation of the east coast boundary between areas where Sequoia (coastal redwood) and Sequoiadendron could be grown on the east coast. Sequoia south of it, obviously, and Sequoiadendron north of it. Even north of the Mason-Dixon line, the several Sequoiadendron at zn 7 Planting Fields arboretum looked pretty bad. OTOH I'm pretty sure I saw one at a garden in Carlisle, PA, zn 6, that looked reasonably well. Nights there are probably a wee bit cooler, and I suspect you could grow them all the way down to Georgia on the highest mountain tops that stay in the 50s at night. Go too far north though, even zn 7 is still going to be too cold for Sequoias. One supposes that the Polly Hill arboretum, for example, has tried them and they aren't on the plant list for a reason. I noticed that my Trachys (while still not looking great), ARE looking much better than just a few days ago. So, don't panic if your Trachys are showing signs of discoloration or those characteristic rings. Some of the leaves will return to normal, and as long as the bud is firm, they should be good to go for the growing season. I finally broke down after those predictions of 0 F and ended up providing some protection (regular, small X-mas light, bubble wrap, and an relatively light weight (insulating blanket) I picked up at the nursery. I used the blanket more as a scarf draped around the midsection (including the growing bud but leaving the leaves at the top and the base of the palms exposed. I tugged gently at them today and they seem very firm. Careful, for those of you that are protecting with lights. I was surprised at how efficient this little set up was. The air inside the bubble wrap felt very mild (not hot, not too warm, but relatively mild). I opened it up a bit as I don't want to encourage growth at this point. TZ, it would take a monsoon to quickly melt all the snow I have in my yard. I would go out with a yard stick to measure it, but I would have to climb the glacier that borders by driveway area (it was built with all the snow accumulations we've had. I got sick of shoveling and ran out of space for the snow so now my "blacktop" is covered in a few inches of snow. I really am expecting another big time weather 'event' from this latest storm.--And though I am sick of the snow, I like it much better than the arctic cold. I certainly hope Feb. is milder, but expect it to be just as stormy--along with that other notoriously stormy month--MARCH!!

I was able to cancel my hotel without a cancellation fee due to weather. And, the show we were to see today offered to give us another date. With that, we'll try to make it a 2-show trip if coordination goes well, hopefully in non-threatening weather conditions. While my sis was to do the driving and the weather doesn't bother her, I'm an anxious passenger with all the other crazies out there, especially with inclement weather in the mix. Home safe, now just waiting to see when and what happens. Here's hoping we don't lose power this round. Appreciate all your feedback.

Buy the Michelin green guide to NYC and do your own tours. Walk! Get hungry and spend the money on the great food in NY! The circle line cruise provides a unique look at the city. It will take you past Miss Liberty, which I always find a thrill. But you need to reserve to go to Ellis or Liberty Islands. Here's the link: http://www.statueoflibertytickets.com You can go to tkts in Times Square for Broadway shows but there are long lines. Sometimes a visit to the box office of a theater can turn up last minute tickets that were released but it's very hit and miss. Best to go for those ahead. I always check the seating plan for the theater before I buy.

If you have a car, you could try a couple of nurseries in Westchester County, right outside the City. I would call them. Both are right on the Saw Mill Pkwy about 30min from NYC. You could also take Metro North (but you'd have to carry big bags).

Thought of a 3rd - Sprain Valley Nursery in Eastchester (not positive, just Google it).

Call them and see if they carry it. Maybe they could order it for you. Rosedale has a lot of orchids but their prices are higher.

I order my supplies from my OS. When I lived in NY it was Greater Westchester Orchid Society. They are in Harrison, right off 95 and close to the City. You could try them.

Thanks for the leads, Jane, I'll work the list. No car - I am a proud owner and a frequent user of a NYC metrocard. :-) My friends or brother can help me pick up by car though if I find the bark.

A few of my orchids are in this mix I concocted myself (equal parts pine bark >3/8ths, coarse('ish) perlite and sphagnum moss), but I have no good reason to have a lot of faith in it. Short term it's fine, but Orchiata long term all the way (till they come up with something better).

For those also interested in Orchiata in NYC area: the best source I found so far is http://www.silvaorchids.com/ in NJ. They periodically (every few months) pool orders and get a pallet. Price is $33-$35+tax depending on the grade ($33 for "Power", or #5). They are at the Green Market on Union Square every Wednesday and every other Saturday, and free bark pickup can be from there if not from their main location.

EDIT: forgot to say, Staten Island Orchid Society people get a pallet annually as well. I missed getting on their order this time, but thought I should mention it for those reading later.
