Can my Phal be saved?
Comments (6)Sorry it took so long for me to come back. I thought I was supposed to get an email whenever someone replied to my post, but I never did. I live in NY, zone 5A according to some website I just found. We have a coal stove and because of that we tend to have super dry indoor conditions. My thermostat thingy says the indoor humidity right now is 15%, and that's with humidifiers going in the bedrooms. I keep the orchid on our entryway table in the living room. It is not directly in front of a window but the whole room is quite bright during the day, all day long. It is near the front door, so I suppose it does get the occasional draft when the door is used, but it is not constant. I will try to see if I can find a cheap plastic pot with drainage that I can set inside the ceramic pot. Though it might seem strange, I don't have random pots just laying around, since I have never kept plants before. I destroyed the pot the Phal came in to get it out without damaging the roots. The bag of Miracle Gro says it's suitable for Phals. It is a pretty chunky mixture with bark in it. As of now, the leaves are still looking good. The flowers have not declined since my last post either. I'd like to post pictures but my computer doesn't have an SD card slot and I have yet to get a USB converter. Thanks for all of your suggestions, and keep them coming!...See MoreHELP! need advice on saving a large broken branch
Comments (5)orchidguy is right. In most cases, pruning paint/sealer is not only useless in fending off unwanted problems, but can prevent a woody plant from doing its own 'healing'. It was once thought that these products kept disease pathogens from entering a wound, but we know, now, that that is not the case. The only times that I would ever recommend that a sealer be used is if the plant in question is susceptible to a particular type of borer insect and it was the time of year for that borer to be active....See MoreHelp! Comments (4)I'd say to root any pieces as you would a cutting - allow to callous then using tdogdad's method of a perlite channel in potting soil or go to Plumeria101.com. Trim off any large leaves that are left. For the root ball, trim off anything that looks too damaged - on the top too, you would want to trim off anything that is ragged. When I receive a rooted cutting in the mail I always soak it overnight in a SuperThrive solution then pot in a perlite-heavy mix, water with the SuperThrive solution, place it on the brick patio etc. What happened to your tree?? Comments (8)I believe that your cactus is a trichocereus spachianus push it back together and it will either heal with scarring or even pup (if your lucky : D ). If the vascular ring don't reconnectthe top piece may just dry up and fall off. Then your cactus will probably pup from the bottom. If you are really concerned about infection, you need to sprinkle some sulphur powder on the wound. You may want to keep the soil dry for a week or 2 (or all winter if you live somewhere cold) while the cactus recuperates....See Morebamboo_ca
