Toro 20016/SN 220422054 front drive assembly

I received this Toro minus all hardware(including the missing pinion gears) from the pinion gear out to the wheel. I got on Partstree,com and thought I had all the parts I needed. It seems to me that when I get the front axle together, there is nothing in place to keep the pinion gear from engaging when the front axle is engaged. It looks like the pinion gear spins freely - nothing to the attach the gear to spin the drive wheel. I noticed a slot (maybe a key slot) in the front drive axle. I think that all the washers are in place preceeding the pinion gear (I might be wrong). Is there something that goes in that slot that attaches to the pinion gear to drive the wheels? Appreciate any ideas.

There is a spring and a pawl that goes in the slot, compressed slightly as the gear is put on. Use a good coating of grease too. These gears are directional and typically marked as so. Does the transmission work? Some pull the gears off to create less drag when the box dies.

Does that pawl extend to the end of the drive shaft? If so, it looks like the pawl is broken because there is nothing showing in that slot. Are the parts #'s 39-9650 for the spring and 612066 for the pawl? I guess that the pawl is suppose to extend to the end of the drive shaft - is that correct(to lock in to the pinion gear)? Thanks much for the tip tomplum. I got this mower free. Everything from the wheel cup to the end of the drive shaft was missing.

Well, it's like this. I usually replace the tranny if they want it repaired. ~ 60$ if I remember correctly. You may even be able to source it cheaper on Ebay. Just get the proper #. A poster here before couldn't figure out his drive issue after installing a transmission- and he was sent a rwd trans and his was a fwd unit- and it turned backwards! I believe that Toro services the gears and bushings separately- which are the right parts you need. It isn't a hard repair, clean up is the worse part. There wouldn't be much inside other than the parts described above and a gasket, possibly seals. You will want to know that the shaft isn't worn where it is supported by the pivot arm and of course that the bearings there seem fine. Here is a link that might be useful: Toro parts and manuals

The one way wheel problem is not a problem, as that's the way it works. Since it is self-propelled, you wouldn't normally try to pull it back, unless you bear down on the handle to lift the powered wheels off the ground. Most lawn mowers sold to home owners are not designed for much more than a weekly mow. And, since your son does lots of mows every week, the life span of the mower has been shortened considerably! The transmission parts, or a new tranny, are quite expensive. You must consider if it is worth repairing, or just buying a new one! Many youthful lawn mowing businesses have been shut down by the kid using the family mower, and wearing it out much before its time! Now is the time for the son to learn the facts of life! To wit: Using the family lawn mower for contract or friendly mowing jobs, will not gain favors from Pops! So, that said, have the son buy a heavy duty lawn mower that he can use (or buy the first one for him) for his business. He must save part of the cash he gets, to buy stuff he needs, and that will teach him something more than what he learns in school! And also, he must learn that he needs to save money to buy the new one, when the old one wears out. I learned long ago, that money talks. And, spending it on the latest fads usually begets you nothing more than being broke most of the time! And/or, on welfare!

I have the noma model #2454550 which has been great but I need to replace the worm gears. The dealer said they were made of brass and it would be easier to change out the whole gear box except they don't seem to sell them! The question I have is, can someone tell me how to get the auger assembly removed? Maybe the two pins by the second auger need to be removed which I don't see how I can! Any help would be greatly appreciated. They say that until you fix a thing , you are merely renting it! Haha X

Was given an old wards rototiller, model number GIL 39012C -- need to know the type (model) of the B&S 5 HP engine that went in it - all I can read is on the Ward's belt housing and it says B&S 204cc 5 HP painted on, plate on engine (if there is one) itself is completely unfindable - at least when I take the sheet metal housings off. no clue as to year etc, only that it needs an air-cleaner before I do ANY kind of work with her (gave my even older home build by Grandpa and a Mccullough chain saw engine to a far younger friend) -- thanks - gotta get summer green manure dug in, and winter green ' nuer planted -- rain took 18 inches of top soil leaving me only red clay - great if you love carrots 3 inches long, and beets 2 inch in D.!!!

Yes, those are the correct #s. The spring recesses in the center of the slot, holding tension on the key. The flat side goes up into the gear. Grease the inside of the gears and slot liberally. Install the spring, then the key holding down on the key to slide the gear on. Then the locator washer and clip. The "R" on the gear should face the right hand side (from the operator position.)

I haven't started the process of taking the remaining parts off the front drive yet. Other than making sure I keep all the parts off in sequence so I can replace them in the same order, is there anything else I should look out for? I was wondering if the drive shaft key runs completely along the slot in the drive shaft - back to front? That's how it engages the pinion gear? Hopefully today.

After looking at the front drive shaft(no key slot in the most of the shaft), I will assume that the springs/keys fit on the end of the drive shaft between the wheel adjust lever and the end of the shaft. About how long on these springs/keys? One on each end of the shaft(two). Will I have to take the washers that fit between the wheel adjust lever and the end of the shaft off to fit the springs/keys in? thanks again for more questions than you really want to reply to.

Correct. At least on the first part. First install the hardware that retain the adjuster. Clean up the shaft, slot and inner gear, then apply grease.You basically have the inner set of hardware, a washer outside the clip that retains the adjuster, the spring, key and gear go on next- then the final washer and clip. Having the parts break down next to you will help.
