A long cruise - a special day at sea!

We're sailing across the Atlantic, time has slowed for most of the guests on Holland America's Maasdam. There are lots of things to do on a sea day. Beginning at 7:00 a.m. there is Morning Stretch in the fitness center. At 9:00, you can make your own Bloody Mary. Other things are the meeting of the book club, bridge instruction, an acupuncture seminar, a cooking demonstration, a class on digital photo editing and more.

On most of the longer itineraries, most cruise lines present featured speakers. These people will talk about appropriate topics. On our cruise, Jim McParland was one of the speakers. I attended several of his presentations and they were all wonderful. His passion, and background, dealt with geology.

He covered many topics during his 50-minute talks (they were replayed on closed circuit TV in staterooms several times). He talked about the natural history of the Caribbean, the Atlantic Ocean, navigating the night sky (he even got the captain to dim the deck lighting every evening for star gazing), the Canary Islands, volcanoes and a solar eclipse.

Unknown to most of the guests on this itinerary we were going to be sailing into a spot where we would be able to see a solar eclipse (about 80%) on November 3! Wow!
