He passed out âÂÂeclipse shadesâ to anyone who wanted them. There were posted warnings all over the ship to not look at the eclipse without eye protection. Even the use of a camera was a no-no without some sort of filter. He loaned a good filter to anyone with a digital camera for a couple of pictures. I took a couple of shots that way. I also put the âÂÂeclipse shadesâ over the lens on my point-and-shoot to see what difference there might be.

I donâÂÂt usually do stuff like this, but I am enthusiastic about Jim McParland and his knowledge and the way he presents his topics. I strongly demand that if you are ever aware of this man presenting something you must go.
I will provide some information from his bio: he graduated from QueenâÂÂs University (Canada) with degrees in geology and education, he taught high school chemistry, biology, physics and geology for 30 years. He coached soccer, basketball, baseball, tennis, golf and track. He directed and produced 25 musicals and was responsible for bringing professional summer theatre to Gananoque, Ontario.
And, he had no problem with giving out his email address, with an invitation to ask him questions after the cruise. He is one of the most amazing men I have ever met!

Of the approximately 1200 passengers on this cruise, my guess is that less than 300 people were on deck to witness this event. It began about 9:45, with the best viewing times between 10:30 and 11:30. The biggest problem for me was that we were on a moving cruise ship and I did not have a tri-pod, so I did the best I could by bracing myself against walls and posts.
