Name That Plant!

Edible Asiatic lily bulb

I was at the Korean market and saw lily bulbs in the produce section so I picked a few up. These are sold to eat. I grow all kinds of roots and tubers from ethnic markets. They looked like regular Asiatic lily bulbs as does the new growth. I was wondering if anyone knows what type of flower I can expect? Is there a specific lily that is sold as food in the Oriental markets?

I can always count on you for an answer. lol Is this invasive like the common ditch daylily? I know they are different types of lilies.

Hello, You purchased a Lilium bulb used for cooking. It is delicious stir-fried and is used like water chestnuts. In China, wild collected bulbs of Lilium davidii are used or farmed. I had another colleague say that the bulbs sold for cooking are hybrids (most likely of the Asiatic class of lilies) If it still look fresh, I'd try and pot it up to see if it grows and flowers. But after processing, I'm afraid they might not be viable. Hope this helps! Riz

These are bulblets. Scaling is one of the ways of propagating Lilies. Plant them shallow. Growing Lilies can pull themselves down with their roots. Or, you can replant them later.

Prcooled before planting?I haven't heard of that,but maybe that is if you plant them in the spring and are expecting blooms the same year.Go ahead and plant them now.They will get the cold needed this winter and will bloom for you next year.

I've never seen it naturalized but it is listed as invasive.
BTW Daylily buds are also edible and I love them steamed
or stir-fried. Too bad they don't naturalize in this area.

They carry a virus that infects other Lilium. The amount of stem bulbils produced is overwhelming. In my former garden I tried to remove and throw away as many as possible to keep the population down. I won't grow it in my new garden.

I know that the buds are edible and occasionally make them. They are also great stuffed (I usually use spinach and feta or other cheese) then dipped in a tempura batter and deep fried. I do the same with squash blossoms. I have no idea what they do with the bulbs. They don't look particularly appetizing though. lol

Thanks for that info Carol. I'll keep them in the pot for now. Do all the bulbs carry the virus? If not how can you tell if they are infected?
