It's possible that you have lost the 'start' mode in the CD ignition that is set for 800 RPM and less. As long as the replacement CD unit fits the mounting holes and is for a L:awn-Boy you should be okay. Set it up with a business card between the unit and the flywheel then remove the card after tightening. Should be about right. There are some things to watch for on the 'V' engine. They used 'Tri-Round' thread-forming bolts in critical areas, and you need to check all fasteners on the engine at least three times during the cutting season; before, during and after. This includes the tank and air shrouds, the mounting bolts, the muffler cover bolts and the muffler plate bolts under the muffler cover. The stamped-steel muffler cover wears out pretty fast and should be replaced if it rusts out or won't seal.

Going back to the first post, there should be no reason to pull the flywheel. Remove the spark plug and set aside. Tie down the safety bail to the handle. Tilt the mower up and try to rotate the blade, which at this point should spin rather easily. If it doesn't, the brake may be on as already mentioned, or the engine may be damaged. If it does spin, the brake is off and the engine is not seized. Replace the spark plug and proceed to replace the faulty components of the recoil starter. There's one other possibility with this model - the fasteners may have loosened in any area of the engine, like the muffler screws, the muffler plate screws under the muffler baffle or the screws holding the shroud base to the engine. For various reasons, some of these conditions could jam the starter or blade. Check every fastener including the engine mounting bolts at the beginning of each season.

There are several LB fans here that wouldn't trade them or sell them off for anything, especially now since they're no longer made. It's amazing how well a 30 year old mower can still run and handle,almost like it's 3 years old! Like Walt said, those years had an aluminum tag riveted to the deck usually between the rear wheels. Later on, they used an aluminum backed sticker tags sometimes towards the right rear wheel, and some on the left side back at the rear wheel. Unless the deck had been reconditioned, those tags generally will still be visible. I'm actually getting ready to totally recondition one of mine with all new engine parts and powder coating the deck, new wheels etc. All my other LB's ran forever and well enough never for me really get the desire to do this, just something to do! This mower will no doubt be around long enough for me to end my mowing chores as an old man.
