Float bowl on snowblower leaks when it's cold

I've got two snowblowers with the same problem. One's a very old Snow King, the other is a not so old Airens. The problem only rears it's head when it gets cold outside(low 40s and below). Gas slowly leaks from around the screw/spring/drain thing at the bottom of the float bowl. I rebuilt the Snow King carb last year, and the problem still remains. My guess is that the gasket for this connection is of poor quality rubber, which gets hard when it's cold, and doesn't do it's job. Just a guess.

Both snowblowers run great, but when it's cold they leak enough to make the garage reek of gas. I could live with it, but it's making the wife mad.

I need to get this fixed this weekend or at least one of them needs to go to the curb. The combination of both of them leaking is too much.

The washer in the bowl drain has deteriorated, it is a common problem. Easiest way to replace it is to remove the bowl and snip the pin with side cutters to remove it. The kit number is 27136A. Clean the carb thoroughly and replace the needle and seat while you are at it.

Shouldn't this part have come with the carb rebuild kit? I thought that I had replaced this washer last year when I rebuilt the carb. But the problem came right back as soon as it got cold.

I totally understand what T-man is saying. There are those times when you break into a carburetor and you just know to stop before you start chasing gremlins and spending undo money and time. If the main nozzle stem is white from corrosion or there are rings of varnish, it's time to throw on a new one. Idle circuitry can be cleaned to a certain point. Buying a carburetor rebuild kit is the only way to go in my opinion. You HAVE to pull those Welch plugs if you want to do a proper job. A piece or .020" tag wire does a pretty good job on the idle passages and transition ports. DO NOT soak your carburetor in "a pan of carb cleaner for a week" as stated. Not even for an hour! The carburetor is sealed from the factory with a special chemical coat. Soaking it eats this coating away. The aluminum will become porous and you might start chasing a phantom leak. A leaky bowl gasket will not cause your carburetor to not receive fuel, but it will cause a no-prime situation. Your bowl nut may have only two holes. Some have two holes in the side and one central jet and some just have one hole in the side with a central jet.

I have the noma model #2454550 which has been great but I need to replace the worm gears. The dealer said they were made of brass and it would be easier to change out the whole gear box except they don't seem to sell them! The question I have is, can someone tell me how to get the auger assembly removed? Maybe the two pins by the second auger need to be removed which I don't see how I can! Any help would be greatly appreciated. They say that until you fix a thing , you are merely renting it! Haha X

The welch plug you found in the bowl is from the bowl vent. I think its only purpose is keep sloshing gas from immediately coming out of the vent hole. It doesn't seal anything. The lower part of the bowl is for the float to drop to its lowest point, so it goes under that part of the float. I've run into a few float seats that are compromised by rust, or by ethanol. They hold pressure......sometimes. Always clean the entire system of dirt or rust, install a filter, install a new seat. The grooved part of the seat goes upward.

Big: Sounds like fouled carb . You have probable ethanol fuel related gumming which is causing the inlet valve to stick open and flood the engine , do you have a manual fuel shutoff ? if so ensure to use it . Get some concentrated carb cleaner and add 2 ounces to your FRESH Fuel . Let it sit for approx 20 minutes . Then attempt to start the engine without choke . It may take a few attempts . Once started run it at high idle setting until it warms up . If this fails you may have to remove the float bowl and ensure that the inlet needle valve is moving freely under the float . I don't know how old your unit is but a new spark plug would be a good investment also , since your current one has been repeatedly fouled . Keep it for a spare once you have corrected you starting issues . Keep us posted . I would not give the local Dealer 2 cents of business , if required there must be other honest small engine repair shops who will assist with a reasonable repair cost . Usually $50.00 is the seasonal/annual tune up rate every where that I have dealt ..all the best !

Well, I went and ordered a kit for each snowblower. I'll let you know if that fixes it, and will be very thankful to you if it does.

27136A....it's WHAT U NEED !!! As Canguy has said,
the rubber sealing washer has deteriorated, and simply
needs replacing. The 27136A is NOT SUPPLIED in a kit
because few engines use a drain.....the older ones did,
but NOT the newer ones.

Get a bowl without that stupid spring drain. Every snowblower I had (Ariens) with the Tecumseh motor idled terribly until I replaced the bowl with a bowl that did not have the spring drain and now she idles fantastic. It causes more problems than good IMHO. - Kris

Well, I just replaced the drain, and that appears to have fixed the problem. Wish I had thought about a replacement bowl sooner.

Anyway, I was thinking of going ahead and rebuilding the carb on the Areins, but I'm not sure what model engine it has. It's an ST724 7-hp. Anyone able to tell me what engine this thing has?

Since you already replaced the bowl drain,why not install a turn off valve between the fuel tank and the carb. and run the fuel out of the carb.

I might go ahead and put in a shut-off valve when I rebuild the carb.

Anyone have any thoughts on what model engine this blower comes with? I couldn't find any markings/tags on the engine itself.

The numbers are stamped into the flywheel shroud beside the spark plug. I am assuming this shroud has never been replaced.

I'll take a closer look at the Ariens tonight. I just got this blower free from someone who got a new one. He got it free frome someone else a while back.

Looks like an after market electric start on this thing, so there isn't a shroud piece besides or around the plug. Looks like this piece may have been removed to fit the electric starter plug/button.

Allright, I found a part number for the Tecumseh engine hidden uner some bubbly rust: 130210f. However, some time web surfing failed to turn up a carb rebuild kit. Anyone know where I can find one?

Spec Number 130210F goes with a Model# H70 (7HP).
Carb kit is part# 31840. Replacement carb is part#
1. 31840 carb kit is VERY POPULAR and EASY to
