Name That Plant!

'sticky' weed.

I don't know if "sticky" is the best word to use but I was pulling this stuff from around my peonies and it would stick to my fingers and clothes.. as would the little seed pods. Hopefully the crappy photos won't prevent someone from ID'ing this weed for me.

I hope that y'all can actually see the thing in these photos.. don't know why I couldn't get a clear one but I did try.

Bedstraw aka Cleavers aka Catchweed. The Latin name is Galium, and apparently there are various types, not all of which have white flowers.

LOL... Sticky Willy!! So guess my "sticky" description was apt afterall!? LOL

That stuff truly is Nature's Velcro. I've been hand pulling it off and on for years. I just snatch it out of the ground. It really helps to not let it get out of hand. As you know, getting out of hand happens in 2 weeks. We did not have any last year but this year we're thick with it. I used to think my dogs would get it on them while walking and bring it back. My dog does not live at that house anymore so that theory is out the window. I get it scattered around the yard, so not sure where it comes in from. It could be an annual plant that comes back from the previous year's seed.

I will also use my weed popper on the dandelions in my neighbor's yard. The people on our west side will mow, but don't do anything about the weeds, no trimming of shrubs and don't even edge along the sidewalk or curb. It is a constant battle trying to keep their weeds under control when they get close to my garden. I actually have edging all the way down the property line just inside on our side and will take our string trimmer and scalp their stuff to the ground up to 5 inches away from the edging. My next job is to trim their bradford pear in the back corner of their yard that is severely hanging over the fence onto my garden - not to mention putting weight on the fence that we replaced three years ago. If it is hanging over on our side, it gets cut.

If you havent used it, spraying with 15% vinegar isn't quite like spraying with Roundup - it can actually be more dangerous for the applicator. Roundup can cause temporary redness, tearing, pain in eyes, and may irritate skin of some using it. 15% vinegar can cause permanent corneal damage, and visible burns on skin....use with caution and the correct protective gear please.

Well ... you just happened to ask for one that I knew (it grows in the pasture). I'm in awe of some of the people here: they can identify almost anything, complete with Latin names off the tops of their heads....
