My new square foot garden + problems...8/

I just noticed this thing growing on one of my argurla plants that i put in a little over 2 weeks ago? What the alskdfjl is it?! heheheh ;p

Something is eating my chard and spinach plants? what gives!

I found these small white egg clusters on the back of the leaves of the chard and spinach! could they be relate to the damage in the previous photo?!!? What should i do?

Another strange problem, a few of the laves on the outside of my celery plants keep going from looking healthy green to yellow. I can't figure out why, they keep cycling.

Not all is bad in the garden, bok choi is growing like a weed! 2 weeks old!

The damage to the chard and spinach looks like leaf miner. The only effective organic method I know of is the removal of the infected areas and disposal. IDK what the white eggs are.

The white eggs are the leafminer eggs. The squiggly tunnels are the leafminer larva.

Wipe off any eggs you see every day and remove the leaves that have tunnels and dispose of them. As long as you don't remove the inner leaves of the chard, it will continue to grow.

I've tried staking my peppers with wooden stakes, using the inexpensive wire tomato cages, and doing nothing ... and I've had the best luck using the wire tomato cages. Last year, doing nothing worked through most of the summer for me, but come early fall, when the vines were long and the fruit most plentiful, I had entire vines (with nearly ripe peppers) snap off in thunderstorms. So this year I'm going back to the wire cages, just to be safe. I hope you'll come back and post pictures of your tomato bed this summer. My experience with cherries is that they get gigantic and take over everything, so I'll be curious to see how yours do and how you end up pruning them. :)

I amend my garden soil with as much organic matter as I can, I add some peat and vermiculite but no where close to 1/3 of the mix. I also add lime and fertilizer (from the recipe in the book). My gardens are not all raised beds. I follow most of the principles from the original book. I have fairly small (18 x 22 ft) fenced in garden space. I use most of the sq ft spacing but I don't put down any markers. I don't walk or lean on the soil, I mulch, I compost (and never have as much as I would like). I companion plant, interplant, succession plant and try to rotate crops. I grow tomatoes using the trench method, 1 sq ft spacing, pruned to 1 main stem and trained up a string. I also use some intensive plant spacing, do some container gardening and have built a layered (lasagna) bed. I read lots of garden books and use lots of bits and pieces as needed. I started off SFGing with a copy of my Dad's book (90's version). It's since then been lost- I've lived in apartments and didn't have the need. So this year I needed one and bought an old old copy-probably the 80's version--for 1.50 I think online. I also ordered the new version from walmart.com for a few dollars less than the standard selling price which will be delivered on March 28- the release date- I think. I couldn't wait either-like fellow posters. I recently traded the old version for some iris bulbs--so I'm not out anything!! I think since the 80's he's made alot of changes and I wanted the new book. The 80's version isn't as complete or helpful as even the later version of the book- so I expect the same of the new one.

Nice little garden! It's amazing how much can be grown in a small space, isn't it? About a month ago, I planted radishes, carrots, lettuce, snow peas, and spinach in my cold frame. As has already been said, the spinach and beets both have leafminer. Two different kinds, but still leafminer. (Explained in the above blurb.)

As for the arugula, it's in bud and will soon flower. Leaves get rank tasting when that happens. Start over, either with seeds or young transplants.

Celery is short on nitrogen.

For the celery would you recommend that i add more composted manure or neptune's harvest fish and kelp spray?

I'm not 100% certain that is nitrogen deficency with the celery - overwatering can cause that type of yellowing as well. But to answer your question, I'd use compost or composted manure before planting and fish emulsion or compost tea after planting.

I notice you have a bit of yellowing in the spinach shot as well. I'm wondering if your pH is too low. Maybe try liming one of your celery squares...

Have to agree that over watering will cause the yellowing leaves. I think I'd take a day off to see if that helps.
