New to orchids: Cattleya vs. Phalaenopsis

Hi everyone,

My questions are:

How much more difficult are the Cattleyas to grow than Phalaenopsis?

How often do Cattleyas flower compared with Phalaenopsis?

How long do the blooms last for Cattleyas compared with Phalaenopsis?

I am new to orchids. I have had a Phalaenopsis for several years now that seems to grow very well and generates about three or four new flower spikes a year. This orchid has been so easy to grow and so beautiful that I have looked into acquiring more.

I am currently thinking about buying a Cattleya or two but I am afraid I don't know much about them. I bought a fragrant one for an aunt a couple years back and it died rather quickly despite looking healthy when I bought it. I don't want to kill another one.

I do have a lot of experience growing and propagating roses and fuchsia so I hope that with the right advice I can learn orchids fairly quickly.

Also, the Phalaenopsis I have now has some roots over two feet long. Should I cut them or let them grow?

Thanks in advance for your help.
