Wrap the connection with some velcro. That should stop them. It's a bad habit because when they get older they could start in on the larger cords. Who knows why cats chomp on whatever it is they like to chomp on. They're weird. Rootie Kazootie loves to chew up emory boards and Ferrell chews on everything,probably because he sees the house as one great big woods where he lived for several years,and everything is fair game.

It appears that I am not alone in this dilemma. Thanks for the advice, Marda. I'm going to go through the whole website below and see if I can figure out what will work best. I have some velcro and will try that.

The weird thing is that they don't chew any other cord and also that they also chew the charger cord in exactly the same place.

Pidge, I don't know why they do it, but I'd charge it in a room with the door closed from now on. Or go to the pet store and get some bitter apple - that works for dogs sometimes.

I really liked some of those suggestions. I would think tin foil would do the trick too.

My friends calico is a fool for cords. This cat is 4 yrs old and still at it. I would suggest the bitters too. It kept the cat off the cords as long as my friend remembered to use it.

It's the cord = a piece of string confusion in a cat's teeny, tiny little brain. They can't seem to tell teh difference, so anything that vaguely looks like string is an object to either chew or to attack as if it were a malignant force. The Velcro or tin foil - either one - should do the trick.

Now what will keep them from going after your toes under the bed covers is a whole other story.

Cats are definitely drawn to thin power cords. I have had some fairly expensive electronics ruined in this way.......mostly computer related. Thousands of tiny needle points up and down the cords. They seem to leave the standard sized power cords alone, but like the thin ones.

I don't know how to stop kittens from chewing on electrical cords, but it's probably worth stopping them. Our top cat right now came to us as a shelter kitten with burns on the corners of his mouth from just such a habit (I almost named him "Franklin"). On the up side, he's a smart cat and possibly learned his lesson. We've never seen him chew a cord.

For what it's worth, and it may just be a total coincidence, the only cords my cats have chewed on over the years have been those with direct current coming from a transformer to a device. It just hit me last night. The cord from a transformer to a white noise machine, the cord from a transformer to an ink jet printer. Etc. Again, I'm wondering if it isn't because they are so fine and thread-like.

I had a kitten who chewed the cord to my keyboard, that was the only cord he chewed. I had to unplug the keyboard and hide it. You'd think he would have chewed on the mouse cord. lol
Speaking of mice, Oreo caught her first rodent today. Right now she is outside defending it from Kreem, RocKat,and Sheena.

Calliope, I think you might be on to something. They chew only the charger cord and always right where the wire goes into the charger thingy that apparently has current in at all times.
But it's also true that months ago when they were really tiny, they chewed a very thin wire.
Well, the FOURTH charger for this month is safely tucked away in a drawer and I'll start trying a couple of the methods you've all given me to try and make sure it's the last charger.

Well, at least now I know which kitten is the culprit: black-and-tan tabby Darcy. I plugged it into a wall outlet about 5' off the ground, wrapped it in tinfoil, and it was maybe 10 minutes before she was snooping around, trying to get at it. There's window sill that extends under the outlet and she can get very, very close. Little bugger!

I'm sitting here laughing to myself...lots of creaative ways suggested to stop the little ruffians from chewing on the cord yet the easiest way of all (I think) is to charge the phone in a room and close the door.

Now, Pidge, tell me why that isn't the easiest way?:-)

Shiela, of course that's the easiest way but naturally I have to turn into some kind of ridiculous challenge. Also, it was DH who came up with the idea and I just thought I'd give him a shot. Next time......

There is no such thing as an easy solution when it comes to cats. Their whole purpose in life is to challange authority....which is why i love them dearly.

Funny you should say that, Shell. My husband really was worried that the foil could harm Darcy somehow, forgetting all about having bought four chargers in a month. Are we fools for cats or what?

It may sound crazy because it is an electronic but if you didn't want to ban them from the bedroom.....perhaps try keeping the cell phone to charge in the bathroom. Has worked for me. Although my kitty Lola was very sick for a week and a half and couldn't hold down any food...thought it may have ben a result of the cat food recall.....come to find out....she has been eating my mini roses in the kit. window.....needless to say she is all better now.

Thing about chargers (at least for me) is out-of-sight, out-of-mind. I forget to charge and forget my phone when I put it somewhere not right out in the open.

Maybe the transformers make a noise/hum that we can't hear but they can?
