Name That Plant!

Sweet-smelling plant with small white flowers

This scraggly little plant has little white flowers that smell amazing. I really know nothing about plants, but a friend of mine referred me to your forum, saying you all would be able to tell me what the plant was. I can't wait to know. Let me know if you need a better picture or a picture of a different part of the plant.

I believe that's Melilotus alba, White Sweetclover.

Thank you very much! I did some searching last night after posting this and came up with the same thing. I'm glad I got verification. The flowers are some of the strongest and sweetest smelling flowers I've ever came across especially from such a small plant.

LOL @ Mary and treelvr, a little DOES go a long way, hah! I love chaparral sage too, and you''re right, Mary, too much water, especially in summer, will kill it quickly. My established plants only get watered every other week in summer and once a month in winter. Fun plants, and fun discussion. If you get one Glendale_gardener, keep us posted! Happy gardening!

carol23 - Thank you so much. I think that was the fastest reply I've ever received on these forums. You're right that my plant looks just like the Solanum nigrum. And it seems the ripe berries are edible. Reading online, it seems this plant is commonly mistaken for the deadly nightshade plant.

Yes, a very invasive escape, grown as a hay crop.

It is surely Melilotus alba, White Sweetclover. As this White sweet clover is well adapted to clay and loam soils, drought tolerant and winter-hardy.

Winter-hardy though fortunately only annual or biennial.
