Name That Plant!

Please identify bush with magenta flowers

This may be an extremely common and well-known plant, but this old guy doesn't know what it is, and wants to get another. The bush is more than thirteen years old, about 6 feet high and 6 feet wide. Bush growth pattern, with probably 50 or more stems coming up out of the ground. Very fragrant spring flowers are popular with butter flies and bees, but seldom see hummingbirds working it.

===>> those are suckers... and every piece with a root can be cut from under.. and made into a new bush ...

if he wants to match this one.. that is the only way to do it ...

just grab one of the outliers ... tug it a bit.. and if you see some roots.. cut just a bit deeper than that ... and go plant it somewhere else.. [i actually grow them in pots until planting in fall. to grow some roots]

i got my whole collection by knocking on doors and asking for cuttings ..

Hi Amanda: I believe your shrub is yellow cestrum. The Florida Nursery Growers selected it as a plant of the year in 2000. Since yours is 12' tall, I'd say you're already doing quite well in caring for it. The literature says it enjoys full to partial sun and well drained loamy soil. As you noted, butterflies (and hummingbirds) find its tubular flowers quite tasty. Those plants in the northern parts of Florida can be top killed by frost but the shrub will come back from the roots. June

Lisa, Do you have your peony in full sun. I planted one when I first moved here and it bloomed for several years. A few years ago we built a new bathroom which reduces the sunlight to the plant and it didn't bloom at all last year and the year befoe it bloomed on such weak stems that they all fell over even though they were caged. In front of the seed building at Baker Creek Seeds they have small trees then have peony planted at the base of them. The buds were just open enough today that I could see the dark red color, but the vines looked so much stronger than mine ever do. I think I have Sarah Burnhart. I have read that they don't like to be moved, but obviously mine doesn't like where it is. What should I do? It has always had weak stems, but at least it did bloom.

Childscapes, on this forum you can start your own separate thread. That might bring you quicker answers. There are also some experts on the Antique Roses forum that can help if it is an older variety. At first I thought it might be Dortmund, a Kordes climber, but the petals look too short. Beautiful photos, by the way.

Probably not a Syringa vulgaris - looks like it has the leaves and flowers of one of the others. In which case it will probably not be as suckerous as that particular species.
