It looks a bit like Bumelia.

Sideroxylon reclinatum might grow in Zone 8a.

Yeah after I got to reading about it I don't think I will. From the sounds of it, this thing can get out of control really quickly and can have a root system that runs 10ft plus. So I think it'll get yanked out as soon as the rain stops here. Sad part - It was almost dead when I moved in and it looked like a rose bush. So inadvertently I brought back to life a rather notorious vining weed! :)

Most trachy's have a varying degree of 'white waxy substance' on the underside of the leaves, my naini tal (which is what i assume you are talking about?) has a good amount of this, more so as it gets bigger. Please post a pic then it can be confirmed.

I'm in Dallas. I always worry about these things because the former owner planted a LOT of invasive species in the gardens. You know, I think it does have thorns, so it probably is a Bumelia. Yup, it has thorns. Man oh man! lots of trees popping up, the last thing I have room for.
