Houzz Has Become UnManageable... I Can't Search 50,000 Photos!
Comments (79)When I started using Houzz I was amazed at how accurate the results of my searches were (in addition to the size of the photos database). It was a great resource. More recently when I've prepared to undertake projects, I've noticed that I just don't get the same, accurate results. My searches are riddled with results that just aren't pertinent. I think this is due to the incorporation of advertisers from my city and surrounding areas (contractors, builders, and others). There are enough ads (or results that are somehow influenced by someone who has something to sell) now to really hinder the flow of design ideas. I guess many internet sites end up using advertisers but it morphs the user experience. It's really made using Houzz less fruitful....See MoreI like it when they advertise.......
Comments (5)The "Free Enterprise" devotees like to talk about the wonderful competition that keeps the market on the straight and narrow, i.e. charging realistic prices. They love competition among their suppliers, which means that they can demand reasonable quotes for stuff they purchase - actually, not exactly. They'll take the lowest price offer for comparable merchandise, unconcerned whether the maker can make it for that price. Which is why U.S. factories (paying $20.00/hour, plus benefits) are sitting idle, while Wal-Mart and other such buy stuff by the boatload from ... it used to be Mexico, or Japan/Korea, etc. when they paid workers $20.00/day (if that high, and no benefits), then Hong Kong/Singapore when their prices went up, now India or China. They love competition among those buying their stuff, as well. But ... they hate competition on their own level. And will do what ever is necessary to get rid of it, e.g. buying out the competition (often at unreaklistically low prices), squeezing them out, whatever. Just get rid of them. What they really llike is "Private Enterprise" - and as few of that number in their own field as possible. Can you name an industry/commercial system in our part of the world where there are more than half a dozen or so entities (and often fewer than that) that carry on something like 80% or more of the business in that field? When that is the situation - prices become artificial. The monopolies/oligopolies can charge what they like, when the real competitors have disappeared from the market. We've had several studies, evaluations, investigations, etc., etc. here regarding the price of gasoline. All have concluded that there really is competition in gas pricing! Does the public believe it? Do you? Have a great week, everyone. ole joyful...See MoreHow can I disable or bypass the "customize your Houzz" screen?
Comments (7)Mad_Gallica - thanks for the tip. I guess I must be one of the Houzz glitches, then, because the "keep me signed in" is always checked. Given Hoovb's comments though, I guess I should be grateful and not quibble about a few extra steps to log in. That also explains why I've been getting spam and other contacts from organizations that are clearly my husband's interest area - his computer is the one that actually keeps me logged into Houzz. No sense getting more people to track me than needed. As Ingrid says, I'm happy to bypass as much of the Houzz advertising process as possible. Thanks for the input and tips everyone - looks like I'll more or less leave well enough alone. Cynthia...See MoreShould I buy hardwood floor from local store?
Comments (22)Buying locally gives you a point of presence for any ongoing issues you may have from either the product or its installation. Having a relationship with a well regarded store may help with the manufacturer. Also, the local store probably knows the best installers in the area. Did you go to the local stores to see the flooring you like or did you pick everything from the online pictures from online retailers? If you use the local stores as a hands on experience to actually see the merchandise but then buy online, haven't you effectively stolen their service the store has provided? The retail stores physically have the merchandise and can provide a service that the online stores cannot. Isn't that worth paying for?...See MoreRenae Bliss
