Please help in IDing this tropical plant

It is a tropical plant with moderately LARGE (10-13 inches from the stem to the tip), waxy, smooth, alternating, ovate leaves, and no fruit, no flowers, but large, soft, red spikes, one of which can be seen in the center of the maroon leaf in the picture. It grows in partial shade, requires little water, and was planted in the front garden before we bought the house. Let me know if I should post more pictures or details. It's growing so well and I'd like to buy more of this plant for around the house, but I don't know what it is!
