WANTED: Praying Mantis Egg Cases

I will trade some nice orchids for Praying Mantis egg cases. I have species and hybrids of lots of different orchids, let me know what you're interested in.

Hi, I saw this post and am hoping someone can tell me how to keep baby mantids alive?! My son loves to mate mantids every year, and for the past 5 years, we have around 100 baby mantids that emerge, but we can't seem to keep them alive. We keep reading more and more, and they seem to live longer each year (this year they lasted almost 2 months), but we don't know why they die. We try to keep them moist so they can molt, and we feed them fruit flies because they're too small for anything else. I know they should have variety, but I can't find any other food small enough around here. Is there a website that sells food for baby mantids? Maybe this isn't even the reason that they die. Does anyone out there know exactly how to take care of these babies?

I've had the egg cases open up and seen the baby PMs emerge after winter limesulphur. Do you recognize the difference between already hatched egg cases and cases with still viable babies? Look for a series of small, parallel slits up the middle of the eggcase, opposite the stem attachment. That tells you that the babies have already hatched. And I grow some weeds (ok, many weeds) near and in my roses that are Lady Bug habitat and I haven't had LS depress my Lady Bug populations. BUT I don't use horticultural oil because of its' ability to smother all insect, acarid, etc. eggs (the bad ones and the beneficials.).

Hi, Libby! I was just passing through and noticed your post, thought I'd throw in my two cents! :o) We have found several egg cases around here, and since I knew they would probably be mowed down, I've moved them. I sometimes will take the stick/stem it's attached to, and stick it in the ground somewhere else. I've also stuck them in with other plants in a container on my porch. I think yours will be fine. They hatch once the weather is warm, but I'm not sure of the temperature. We even had some hatch in the house this winter!!! (A praying mantis had been in the house last fall, she left an egg sac up inside the corner of a window. When the weather got cold, we turned on a heater near the window, and they hatched!) I would suspect that if the egg case were on a Fraser fir, it was probably grown in a cold part of NC and the mantid species must be one that has eggs that can winter over in even your climate. Joe

They eat each other. When keeping more than one in confinement they can become cannabalistic.
