Name That Plant!

Unknown Oregon Shrub

Hello GardenWeb!

My husband and I moved into our first house a few months ago and were fortunate enough to have it come with lots of trees and shrubs. Less fortunate is the fact that neither of us know the last thing about plants, and consequently everything in our front and back yard is a mystery.

We just noticed yesterday that one of our shrubs has started to flower. This will be our first spring here so we're really excited to see how our plants will change with the season.

Meanwhile, we're having no luck in identifying this now-blooming shrub.

Anyone want to take a guess and satisfy our burning curiosity?

Thanks for that name for unknown plant #1! (Malva sylvestris) Do you consider it a weed? Here is another one, unknown plant #2. It is the large plant with the white flowers. This view isn't so good, so I'll post two pictures: Here is a closer image (a better one) of unknown plant #2, if I did it right: Hopefully, you can click on the thumbnails to get larger images. Thanks again for the help. This unknown plant #2 was one I bought at an amateur plant sale for $1. It was maybe 6 inches tall when I bought it this spring, but now it is 6 feet tall in July. I planted it right in front of one of my wife's rose bushes. Whoops. The bumble bees just love this plant. There is a pocket in the back of the flowers where they crawl in and out. Martin

Zone 7 for Ashland is the Sunset Zone, of course, and not the USDA Zone. Leaves of plant shown are too pointed and glossy for the longtime Spring Bouquet* ('Compactum') sold by Monrovia, which I think of as the "true" item merely because that is what I saw under the name for decades. Until probably at least two other cultivars appeared on the local market in recent years, also offered as 'Compactum'. *The cultivar is 'Compactum', with Spring Bouquet being a selling name and not a cultivar name

Variegated Japanese Pieris pi-ER-is ja-PON-i-ca

Broadleaf evergreen shrub, 3-5 ft (0.9-1.5 m) high and equal spread, slower growing than the species and more dense. Leaves have a white margins which may be tinged with pink in spring. Drooping white flowers, possibly less abundant than many other cultivars.
Sun to part shade. Best in moist, well-drained, acid soil with ample organic matter. However, not as demanding for acid soil as many other ericaceous plants. Responds to fertilization, especially in high rainfall areas. Low nutrition may result in yellow foliage.
Hardy to USDA Zone 5
Corvallis: 120 13th St.
