athenainwi, Kuban Comet looks like a plum I'd try. Is it self fertile.

I would also look at the St. Lawrence and Fedco catalogs since they specialize in cold-weather varieties.

Thanks, I looked at both catalogs but there weren't many that were self fertile. My concern with Kuban Comet is that I found a chart when I googled it that indicated that it blooms fairly early which wouldn't be good here.

Yes it is self fertile. Sounds like the perfect plum tree for cold climate growers.

Raintree catalog- "A unique cultivar from Krymsk, Russia, this teardrop-shaped, clingstone plum with bright yellow, very sweet flesh is extremely hardy, so it thrives in cold climates. The self-fertile, dwarf tree, which reaches about 10Â tall, is very productive and easy to grow. 2"-long, yellow-orange fruits turn red when fully ripe in late-July, and the tart skin resists cracks."

Thanks for the link Konrad. How long did it take your plums to start bearing fruit? My other thought about plums is that I could get a multi-graft asian plum which would probably fruit earlier than the european plums, but I like that the Europeans keep better.

athenainwi, Kuban Comet blooms early, because it is a Japanese plum. Raintree has it listed with the (later blooming)European group. I'd like to try it upstate on myrobalan root stock.

I find that Japanese plums are not setting very much fruits for me, with the European it does much better, it could be because these are self fertile.

I think I'm going to buy Kuban Comet and Superior and plant them very close together. According to Raintree they should pollinate each other and ripen fairly far apart. I found several recommendations for Superior from Wisconsin growers in other threads on this forum.

athenainwi, I ordered a Kuban Comet last week. I originally thought KC was European. Sounds like a great self fertile Japanese early plum 'found' in Russia. You will probably get blooms on that Superior plum this spring. Thanks for opening this thread.

Hopefully we'll both be happy. I ordered Kuban Comet today along with Superior, a 4 in 1 European Pear, and two grapevines. I can't wait for spring.

Time will tell. First time I ordered from Raintree. What varieties are grafted on that 4 in 1 Pear tree.

The Pear is Orcas, Rescue, Highland, and Harrow Delight. It's the first time I'm trying a multi-graft tree but all the varieties sounded good and I didn't want to get two pear trees or do my own grafting. It's the first time I've ordered from Raintree too but I've heard good things about them.

That is the good combo pear. Last season I cancelled 3 in 1 pear from Raintree because I could get three individual pear trees for same price on sale. My box has to make it 3500 miles so I am keeping my fingers crossed.
