Primocane blackberries in California
Comments (8)Yuppers. I'm growing Prime Jim this season. Pretty darned hardy. It was leaving out nicely, sending out some nice side canes when it was ravaged by either a rabbit or a rat right back down to a single cane with no leaves. Traps came out, and we surrounded it with 3' high hardware cloth. That was about 4 weeks ago, and it is again, leaving out very nicely. Amazing, I thought it was a goner. I know both Prime Jim and Prime Jan should do well here. I would certainly email the U of Ark to see if Prime Ark will also grow. I'm also trying Chester to see if it does well. Now, if we could just get a thornless, pime cane bearing blackberry that was sweet and juicy, we'd be in business! Patty S....See MorePrime-Jan Blackberry in my location?
Comments (5)Steve, I don't have experience yet with blackberries but I would like to throw out a thought. My experience comes from figs, Chicago Hardy to be exact. I had the same rational when I bought my figs thinking that if it produces on new wood I would get a crop. Unfortunately the new wood does not mature and produce quickly enough in our area. I have gotten some figs to form but never to ripen. This year I have one fig planted outside close to the foundation and well protected, and several in my garage in a tiny space with a heater connected to an outlet that will turn on at 37F. I hope to get some figs this year some how. I too would like to try blackberries but have decided since they won't survive without protection I might as well protect them and try to get a harvest on the old wood since I know I will not get a harvest on new wood. I ordered Siskiyou as an early ripening type knowing it will have to be protected. It's just an experiment and I wish I could give you some results but I don't have any yet....See MoreBest late blackberry? And a primocane question
Comments (4)Thank y'all! Maybe my feed store will even have a Triple Crown locally and I won't have to pay shipping :) I'm excited for all my berries this year. I have Loganberry (quite early, I think), Cherokee Blackberry (early and very yummy last year), Tayberry and Boysenberry (I don't know when those come exactly) and then a couple of raspberries! I had no idea raspberries could be so good, only having had store-bought :) I have a killer cobbler recipe, too, if anyone needs one :D...See MorePrime Ark Freedom: Absolute Best Blackberry For Socal Ever
Comments (33)My second year here in Mississippi, my plants were babies from norse farms.. three inches tall. Planted in spring and I got some fruit off them the same year. I let them get up 3 foot tipped them and then let laterals get out 2 foot an tipped them. This is a heads up for those in mid zones like 7. My weather has been warm and then A FROST COMES in. My new primal canes were coming up and looking good. I did not pay attention to frost warning. It got my canes and some were only two foot tall. They will now shoot out laterals. They are blooming like crazy as well the frost will bite them. We are here at Apr 15th an another Frost may hit. So when you plant these consider having a way to cover them. I Have seen that large production farms are using a high tunnel. These PAF dont do well in high heat either. So a structure that allows shade cloth for summer would be good. They will try to make a late crop and I had some making berries.. but again a crazy early frost.. in October zaped them. The weather has been unpredictible to say the least. So build a structure around them and prepare for it. These are incrediable berry producing plants and fast growing super plant.. I get excited just watching them grow.. but you have to protect them from crazy weather changes....See Moreenglishivy
