The handful of people that I know in Phoenix that have tried haven't been very successful. Despite 4 to 5 years on OHxF87, only one individual has been able to grow a handful of very small pears. In general, only select Asians and Asian hybrids (Kieffer), tend to produce in the Valley. Most of the time, with the exception of Kieffer, pears fail to size up, likely due to the heat. Out in the colder areas of Maricopa County (Wickenberg and north, around Yarnell), you can grow them. Here in Zone 5-6 (Western Montana) I ripened Anjou, Gold Spice, and one I'm not sure of because I lost the graft label, probably Flemish Beauty. Had Ure coming when I picked it early. Other grafts on my tree that have yet to produce are Clapp's Favorite, Dana's Hovey, White Doyenne, Seckel, and Winter Nellis, as well as local favorite "Frost" and a family heirloom from Lou Pezzuti, which we named for his father Joe. Joe originally saved scions from a tree that was getting bulldozed (I suspect a seedling). A neighbor has some beautiful Boscs. The original tree is Gold Spice on FHx333, I believe, and has been a reliable producer every year, including the year it was planted; one year I had no pollination, but that is another story. The tree is kept at 12 feet tall and about 8 feet diameter by pruning. Some grafts do appear more vigorous than others and I prune them more aggressively. And I grafted Flemish Beauty to a Bartlett on unknown rootstock and it overgrew badly- it's been a wrestling match ever since to keep it hewn to a manageable level and I haven't full succeeded in controlling it (not my tree, so I can't obsess over it as much as I might.) It's now over 3 weeks and I'm showing you the trees what have no sign of life, the rest, for the most part are pushing, some have a few leaves, overall, very disappointing. Konrad...yes the photos do not look good but the cambium tissue still looks alive on most.....suggest you cut back to a few inches above graft to see if you can get the roots to push some new secondary buds. The trees seemed to have been mishandled beyond normal shipping stresses as they all left our farm well packed and alive. You can check with Post Canada to see why they took so long to deliver your order and make a claim against them. We do not give refunds but will replace any dead trees this fall or next spring. Ken My reply,.. So, you're still trying to blame post again, first they oven fried it and now it took too long. NO, it didn't, it came at normal time frame, (regular shipping). They should have been shipped allot sooner! (Some were dry and dead at shipping, only Mulberry looked good) If oven fried or blaming post Canada, why Mulberry looked in perfect shape? I will cut them, but fact is, these trees are way beyond normal and even if something will shoot out, these new "late growth" will most likely kill the tree in winter since no proper hardening off!

Hello, I just found out that there are several kinds of lemongrass and sometimes you can get a type from nurseries that are actually citronella grass, which you don't eat, but make candles and oils from to repel bugs. Anyway, I got some from a nursery this spring, but it isn't the kind for eating, so I got a bunch at the Asian store nearby and stuck several of the stalks into a bucket of water outside under the shade of the fig tree that's out front and in four days, it's put out some roots! Since I got it at the Asian store, I know it's the kind you do eat and I got the bunch for a couple of dollars and can root it all for many plants, although I just want a couple of them for my own use. I will chop up the rest of the stalks and freeze them in small quantities to put into food. Vivian
