Engine doesn't seem to be getting fuel

I have a Sears 6.5hp Briggs & Stratton mower that will not stay running. To start the mower there is a button that is to be pushed 3 times and then pull the cord. The mower starts and then dies. If the button is pushed several times the mower will run longer. It appears to not be getting gas. Thinking there was a carburetor problem I replaced it. no change. The fuel flows freely from the fuel line when pulled from the carb. Any ideas on which way to go?

ok turns out my diaphram bolts were loose and gas was leaking onto the tank gasget. Now I have another queston, my engine still seems to run rough especialy at idol, it goes Boom....boom....boom....boom, and my whole mounting cart jumps side to side, do you think I messed up the valves when lapping them?

Before going to a lot of trouble--check the breather hole in the gas cap! Sounds like it might be plugged up with "mud", caused by a Mud Dauber Wasp laying an egg in the hole, then covering it with a bit of "poo" and going away. Later, the poo hardens, the egg lies in the cap, until spring, the baby wasp arises, crawls out, and flies away! In the mean time, somebody has complained about the engine on their lawn mower won't run more that 10 seconds, starts and dies! This also happens to any engine with an unsealed fuel system. Used to happen on cars and trucks, back in the "olden days"!

I would bet that the fuel jets are clogged with varnish/gum from having the carb dry out over time with fuel in it. Time to clean the carb.

Oh, good idea! I just did a visual of the oil fill tube without taking it off. I cannot get fill tube off until I get the engine cover off after I retrofit/cut the metal frame...plan on doing this retrofit this coming weekend. In any case for now, it does not appear there is any cracks from what I could see/feel nor did it look like there were any oil leaks in the fill tube area. See attached pic. Since I do exactly know how it works....Are you saying that if there is a crack, this would cause a loss in crankcase vacuum, and this lost of vacuum could in turn cause oil to come out around the fuel pump? Thanks for the idea and I will get to do a full inspection of the fill tube this weekend.

That's kind of a mystery. It's a fuel issue, but throw in a curveball of a new carb.......Was the carb brand new, never used? I would suspect a dirty bowl nut.

I ordered it new from Sears. Where is the bowl nut? Is it in the carb?

It is possible that you have an issue with the intake manifold cracking/ loose or the seal did not get replaced. Model and type #s would help. Either that or you have contaminated the new carb w/ water or debris.You will have to drop the bowl to see. The main jet is in the nut that retains the bowl. Now might be a good time to clean the fuel tank and flush the line of debris or replace it. Add fresh clean gasoline only.

I'll drag out my pictures of Tecumseh bowl nuts. The one looks similar to a Briggs.

I seem to have a similar problem, no fuel to the machine. However, it is strange that when it lies on its left side (when I stand behind and facing it) it seems to get the fuel and can be primed, while standing in normal position it does not get fuel and cannot be primed even when I held down the safety bar (required during starting and running). After priming it and returning it to standing position, it can be started, but it stopped almost instantly - most likely due to lack of fuel. How do I solve this problem?
