Charging system damage

What is the most common damage from hooking a set of jumper cables up backwards on a garden tractor? I did this yesterday while in a hurry to get my old Gravely 5665 started. Both battery cables are black and I just screwed up. I replaced the battery and she started up and runs just fine but is not charging. I can get a new voltage regulator (part #33-400 for a Kohler 301) for $45 but thought I'd ask before spending any money. Thanks.

To start with check your AC coming out of the stator at the regulator. Then for DC directly out of the regulator. Unsure how your Gravely may be fused from there. There are more specific tests in the manual. Below is a link for Kohler where you can view both manuals and parts for free. "Enter as guest"

electric PTOs and charging systems don't like being hooked up backwards. other than that the tractor don't even care.

if you ar elucky it got a fuse, if unlucky it got both the regulator and the stator.

Yes, it has a stator under the flywheel and at times a regulator on the shroud. Do you have a tester to confirm a few things? I would check for a draw in the system as well what voltage you have entering the battery.

Most likely you have a dead/bad battery and until that is taken care of, you are very possibly throwing away money.on a new solenoid etc. Most likely, that tractor only has a 3 AMP charging system. It would take 10-12 hours of high speed running to fully charge a good but fully discharged battery. Get the battery charged and LOAD tested first. Your current battery is so low, it's basically "sucking" everything the alternator is putting out. Slow speed and you don't have enough power to supply the carb fuel solenoid and it drops out. A quick test- When running at high speed, do the headlights work? IF they do, the charging system is MOST likely OK. The lights operate of a separate AC lighting circuit and only work when running.

Is what you are calling the ground a GREEN wire? That is the stator brake wire and is only grounded with the key OFF. To add a bit- The Green wire probably goes to pin 87A of OPR2. The default(OFF) position of the relay connects 87A to pin 30 which is ground. Possibly the relay isn't being powered through the seat switch, has a bad connection or a bad relay. A simple test is to simply unplug it. You can download the Kohler Service Manual at the link below. It depends really on the charging system. I see a few of the Snapper front engine riders, but they have Briggs engines and manual deck engagements. You normally find higher amp charge systems on machines w/ the electric PTO rather than manuals. If your Kohler happens to have an external regulator- you are OK electrically. Usually they are 15 AMP systems. If not, it could be as little as 3 AMP. Also true is how long will you be running the the sprayer. To partially discharge a battery a couple of times a year, I wouldn't worry much. Just charge it up afterwards. Model and spec numbers from the engine may help.

Only one fuse in the system and it ohms out good. Gonna take some voltage readings when it quits raining. Couldn't find much on the Kohler web site about the regulator/rectifier.

?? I don't think they care either, there is just a simple coil.

if they have an antichattering diode, it blows. it is across teh +/- backwards to begin with. once you hook it up backwards current will flow and blow it. doesn't really hurt the pto itself, should have clarified.
