Scanmike: We are on Long Island so we aren't too far from each other... We went to Montauk Carpet on Route 110 in Farmingdale.. it's south off of exit 49S on the LIE... They had a very big selection... we purchased it on Sunday, they measured on Tuesday and installed on Thursday... it was perfect... Friends have gone there too and have also been happy.. Newhomebuilder: We have a small dog... maltese/shih tzu mix... we used to have carpet on the stairs but removed it a few months ago intending to replace it sooner or later... well our dog used to go up and down but one day when we were out, she must have fallen and refused to go up the stairs anymore :( .... All our bedrooms are upstrs, so it helped us make the decision quickly... She used to sit at the bottom of the stairs and cry for someone to bring her up... Poor thing must have been scared and hurt.. So it's only been a few days and she goes up a few steps and stops.. but we're hopeful she will go all the way...She goes up from the basement on the carpeted steps... What we do for our pets!! :)

You have to be careful about starting and stopping before the very last step (actually the hallway floor) depending upon how thick the runner is. Believe it or not, neuromucularly your feet are "programmed" after each has taken one step up or down. You should actually be ok, the more problematic situation is when there is bare stairs and carpeting at the top: since it is a "higher" step, due to the carpet thickness it can trip you up sometimes. What could potentially happen here is that your food expects to meet the step before it actually does since the last step is "lower" due to the absence of carpet. If you notice this you could place an area rug at the top.

Thanks :) I'm just the conduit as this began as a simple change out the hand railing new balusters project ( ie minimal involvement for me ). ALong the way she decided she wanted to re do the treads and at that time I figured we'd just replace the existing carpe tio the stairs with new carpet to match since the stairs run directly into the carpet upstairs. In addition, the stairs turn 180 degres in the middle.. thus when snding upstairs in the hallway you can see the entire stairs. Alas, the carpet has been discontinued. Now, she is having toruble thinking the stairs will look good with a different carpet, even if it has patterns or colors to draw upon the existing carpet. She is good with many things but visualizing something unseen is not one of them. I'm trying to locate a homoe in the local area or at least a photo where this has been done, using a nosepiece at the top step to provide a break. I think it will look fine but I'm probably the last person I would trust with home decorating in mind. Our stairway is somewhat unique in that you see al of it form above as well as the entire hallway above ( very open to below ). Anyway, thanks for asking... I do appreciate the help offered so far and now it will be time for her to decide what she wants to do though again a photo of complimenting stair carpet would be helpful!

I own this Antilocarpa area rug in my hearth room. It is stunning! However it is navy blue. I’ve considered carpeting my stairway with it as well.
