Hello - Check the ignition module.

You will need to remove the green (plastic?) engine cover - 4 screws on top - and then the black metal engine shroud - 4 bolts - two front and two rear. Remove the gas tank to get to the two rear bolts of the metal shroud first by lifting up on the tank - it takes some effort. It is slip fitted to metal tabs on the rear of the black metal engine shroud. The gas tank is all plastic so be careful not to damage the "fingers/hooks" that slip into the tabs on the engine.

The ignition module is located at the front of the engine and held in place with two star screws. My 2006 LB 10684C would not start the other day. I replaced spark plug & air filter. No spark on spark plug when removed and held to engine for ground. The metal frame holding the ignition module was rusted so I removed the two green wires from the module and the single screw for the metal tab - then the entire assemebly - two screws. I slid the black round module with the spark plug wire attached out of the metal frame - takes some effort. I ran the frame on a bench wire wheel and cleaned the rust off. After re-assembly the mower started and ran fine.

Note - Take a photo of the engine before disassembly. I guessed at the clearance between the flyweel and the ignition module. I was told it should be 10000th. My mower ran fine though. I will need to pick up a feeler gauge as I could not locate mine at the time.

I ordered a new ignition module - $42.00 - for a spare.

One item I did not mention was the fact that the spark plug in my LB 10684 was wet with fuel so I knew ite was not a fuel delivery problem.

Remove the plug and check for spark immediately
after it shuts down.

Search here for cleaning the jet. It's in a brass bolt holding the carb float bowl on. This is a yearly job on the Tecumseh 195cc engine.

Sorry about the delay - tried to get one last camping trip out before 'w'-word decides to settle in for 6 months.

Here's what I've done so far (that didn't cost me money) :)

- replaced oil (it was all dark, so now it's got fresh oil in there)
- cleaned out the jets on the brass bolt. They looked clean, but I used the wire from a wire-tie and poked it through all of the holes (x3).
- I checked the spark plug - before, the spark is nice and defined.
- I went to the local 'hospital' here in town, and they suggested reseating the coil, so I removed it - cleaned off whatever gunk I could find (grass, bugs, etc) on the coil, and put it back on. Ensured that the rotor was able to rotate w/o hitting the coil, and let her run for a few minutes until manually stopping it. It seemed to be burning a lot of oil

Tried to start it up immediately after, and it won't start. I checked for a spark again, and nothing this time around.

So...should I try to do the above (I should have reread what was noted by lbgold94 re:cleaning the frame, etc, not just the coil)? Or should I go ahead and get a replacement? (it's 53$ here in Canada - I'm sure I could find it online cheaper, but with shipping probably comes to the same).

Once it "cools" down again (45 minutes) I'll go back out and try cleaning the frame where the coil mounts and see if that helps any.

Also, how dry should the plug be? I noticed that it had some oil near the gap side, but not enough to short the gap out, at least, I don't think it was shorted - I guess I could test that with an ohmmeter.

As you inferred earlier, the model has a magnetic safety switch that kills the ignition if a bag or mulch plug is not properly installed. The steel rod must be seated in the RH slot on the body and the slot must be clean of any debris. You could take off the plastic parts at the rear of the mower to access the switch and temporarily short it to see if it runs. Always install the bag or plug before starting the mower as objects may be hurled from the discharge port at high velocity.
