Name That Plant!

Red Trumpet vine??

I apologize for not having a picture, but someone supposedly sent me Red Trumpet vine last year. Well, what I grew was something that resembles a tiny morning glory. The flowers were more of an orange than red and in the shape of a morning glory, only miniature. The diameter of the flowers was only about 1/2" to an inch. The seeds I harvested look like black morning glory seeds, only half the size. What the heck did I grow? :)

I'd like to share them with others, but I don't want to say they're red trumpet vine when they're not. :)

There's an annual morning glory of the botanical name Ipomoea coccinea, sometimes commonly called "Red Morning Glory". Foliage like a typical morning glory with small tubular, orange-red flowers flared a little at the end.

Too bad "Red Trumpet Vine" is used as a common name for so many plants.

Thanks, Joe. Yeah, it is too bad that common names of plants are used for a multitude of things. :) I think that's what it is, though; red morning glory. At least now I can trade these and feel better about it.

Distictis buccinatoria (Red Trumpet Vine)

I am looking to create a privacy screen which will: rise to 6 ft (no less but hopefully not much more either), provide excellent color much of the year via flowers even after pruning, be a moderate to low water user once established, and look good within a somewhat English style garden as opposed to a palm oriented tropical garden or a desert scape. I couldn't find a plant that would do all this and stand on its own, so I am thinking of using a Distictis Buccinatoria or Laxiflora to grow up a wide, 6 ft tall trellis for structure. My theory is the distictis will provide lots of desired flowers without too many being lost to pruning. I am curious if the laxiflora and/or buccinatoria will be dense enough when grown to fill in and hide the trellis structure... making the plant appear as a 6 ft high hedge. I was also considering the Escallonia but it sounds as if pruning to maintain 6 ft tall and 3 to 4ft thick hedge will knock out virtually all of the blooming. I would be grateful for any replies... sooner is better as I need to get this privacy screen up to make my neighbor happy. Thank you This post was edited by widmark on Sat, Feb 8, 14 at 21:39

Hi I suspect it would do poorly in a tropical climate but that could be an advantage as it wouldn't be invasive. ? There are so many tropical vines that would be ideal for your climate Think i would choose from among those?? gary

I think the trader just got the name wrong somehow. I've never heard it called Red Trumpet vine. Orange Noah is a very popular common name for Ipomoea coccinea.
Ok I just google "red trumpet vine ipomoea" and I found a store selling a 'Lil Red Trumpet Vine Creeper' aka Ipomoea hederifolia and down a couple below that they do show 'Orange Noah' aka Ipomoea coccinea. I tried to post a link to the store, but GW wouldn't let me. It is the last link on the first page of the google search if you go to look.
Anyway, it could be possible that you grew Ipomoea hederifolia?

Thanks Remy. It looks like both the ipomoea hederifolia and the ipomoea coccinea. :) Thanks so much for sending me that link. At least now I can put both names on it when I label it rather than red trumpet vine!

They are different names for the same plant. I. hederifolia may be the currently accepted name with I. coccinea as a synonym.
