Hi crabjoe, The NTEP trials for you area (MD) for AMAZING GS (IS-PR 276) is only rated July 5.0 Aug 5.0 Sept 7.0 Oct 7.0 Mean 6.0 That mean score is on the lower end of the TTPR's on the list which range from 6.0-6.7 Just for the heck of it, the most south-easterly state with TTPR trials is Virgina. I didn't see Amazing on their list but here is the top rated variety. It's got ratings from MAR-OCT excluding June DP1 Mar5.0 APR4.3 MAY4.3 JUL7.0 AUG7.3 SEP7.7 OCT8.7 MEAN 6.0 In "the south" it is said that Perennial rye is used only as an overseed like the annual rye and to die out. I'm not 100% sure that I believe that so I'm going to try it. (I live in N. GA) Anyway I just thought I'd point out the belief is that they do not survive in the midatlantic either however there is another member that is growing it in VA and also want to point out that the quality ratings are just so-so compared to other grasses. What it may offer is better adaptability to poor soil conditions and fast germination. If you were in a pinch. I don't understand why the quality ratings are terrible in spring and early summer but are much better in the hottest part of summer. Maybe someone can explain. It is also like that for bentgrass and I noticed this in a few states.

Reseeding bermuda is not really done in the spring either. You will see a lot of advertising and see giant bags of bermuda seed starting in February but resist the urge. Bermuda seed takes best when the soil is very hot...as in July. What kind of bermuda do you have now? If you have a sodded variety I would suggest you do not seed it under any circumstances. Seeded and sodded varieties are like two different plants. If you mix them, it will always look weedy.

There is no way a pre-emergent herbicide can distinguish between weeds and what we may consider non-weeds. They are simply all broadleafed plants and the effect should be the same. That's why it is not recommended to use pre-emergents where you will be sowing seeds or allowing self-sown seeds to germinate. I would attempt using Preen or some other pre-emergent before I'd resort to RoundUp, even in clear areas under the tree canopy. There is some evidence that repeated use of RoundUp across a tree's root system can have damaging effects. I realize you may be dealing with a great many seedlings, but I'd recommend manual removal over and above anything else. I deal with freely seeding maples myself and understand what a PITA it is to get rid of them. Raking up the samaras when they fall would be my first step. The less of these that remain on the ground, the less germination that will take place and many fewer seedlings to deal with.

PRG germinates pretty quick, which leaves consumers feeling satisfied. I think it does offer some level of protection to KBG during establishment. If the consumers watered a seed blend that included KBG and PRG long enough for the KBG to germinate, the KBG would eventually fill in the holes left by the dead PRG. Before that occurs, PRG blends very well with KBG in terms of color and texture... much more so than annual ryegrass would. Likewise, PRG is pretty hardy during the growth season and adds durability to a lawn, helping to preserve the integrity of a stand until the KBG starts its crazy lateral growth. Plus, PRG looks absolutely gorgeous when it's growing. If I were not in the transition zone, I would be looking for a 100% PRG lawn. :-P
