Bermuda vs Zenith Zoysia- woodland lawn

Please assist us. We live in the woods and need grass near the house to control mud/clay and erosion. We're preparing the soil for sod. Which is better suited to the following conditions, Bermuda or Zenith Zoysia:

1. Full sun. No sprinkler system.
2. Woodland setting all around us (we're not in the suburbs; lots of competition from weeds and native grasses.
3. Not expecting to have a golf course lawn; but we will care for it as far as cutting and fertilizing regularly.
4. Must survive on its own except in extreme periods of drought. We will water thoroughly until it's established.

I think you've run out of time to grow them. Try annual rye grass when it cools down as a winter cover then try Zenith in May/June whenever it's warm enough.

Zoysia needs way less fertilizer compared to Bermuda to look good. Not as invasive or fast grower. Maybe better shade tolerance but I'll have to look it up how Zenith compares to other cultivar.

Personally, I'd go with Palisades.

I agree with Lou, wait until next year and go with Zenith Zoysia.

Put down some Perennial Ryegrass in another couple of weeks and be happy until next Summer (early).

I bought 700 plugs of Meyer's Zoysia, stuck it in the ground in my back yard, and now the stuff lifts me off the ground when I walk on it. Nothing else can grow in it...the weeds are choked out; the annual bluegrass, now trying to takeover my Bermuda in the front, hasn't even penetrated that dense, rough turf. It seems to come to green sooner than the Bermuda, and it lived extremely well through our drought last summer. I don't know if anyone else here (on this post) has had a lawn of what they call "Monster" grass down here (GA), but this stuff is the best grass I've ever seen. It's thick and grows extremely dense. The bugs don't even like it. The only caution I can give is that you should be ready to sharpen those mower blades often -- this stuff is hard on the blade edge. Had I to do it all over again, I would surely pick the Zoysia for my front lawn.

A properly sharpened and set up reel mower will always give a better cut than a rotary. Reel mowers cut like a pair of scissors, the grass is cut by a moving blade against a stationary bedknife. It also gives more even results as the bedknife holds the blades up while they are cut as opposed to being hit by a spinning blade with some lift provided by a suction effect from the blade. After I cut my lawn with a rotary I usually have some missed blades. Reel mowers are the only ones that can cut very short, so if you want to have a fairway for a yard, then you need a reel mower. A bumpy yard however, will give an uneven cut at low heights (the yard will look even, but the grass on mounds will be shorter and in the dips will be longer), and scalping can occur, but this is also true of rotaries too. Rotaries, if their blades aren't very sharp will tear grass blades, so you get ragged edges, which isn't great for grass, although a poorly sharpened reel can have its issues too.

Well what was your decision? Did you go with Sod or Seed? My husband and I had Zenith Zoysia sod put down this past May. That was the best decision we ever made. I have never seen grass so thick.

Interesting article... about seed vs. sod. The Sod cost is about $800/1,000 sq ft installed with top soil. Not bad but not really in the budget... a near sure thing. For about 1/10 the cost, but more intensive management of seed germination, the seeds can be planted. The disruption due to rain I was not aware of or the fact about surface exposed seeds? These can be planted in the dry season, to avoid the seasonal torrential rains.

It is not too late to lay sod as it can be laid anytime of the year providing the ground is not mud, snow covered, or frozen. Spring is the preferred time, but you can lay it now if you wish.

As for which type is entirely up to you and what you want to put into it.

Both Zoysia and Bermuda has some common characteristics of similar like texture mowing heights, drought resistance, Spring green , Fall dormancy, and wear resistance.

Bermuda requires full sun, multiple fertilizer applications per growing season, . high mowing frequency of twice a week, repairs it self fast from damage, aggressive and invasive.

Zoysia only require two fertilizer applications per year, grows slow so less mowing, can tolerate some light shade, slow to recover from damage, and has some insect and fungal issues.

It really boils down to how much work, money, and time you want to commit to. Bermuda is high input, Zoysia is medium input.
