Name That Plant!

I think this is a potted lily? Not sure.

I bought this lonely little pot of flowers from Shaws supermarket a couple of weeks ago. They came with with no label, no tag, just a price sticker and the ability to make a little voice in my head whine "buy meeee!".

I think they are a lily, but really have no idea. I went to a few lily identification sites and didn't see them in any of the photographs.

They are about 1 foot tall with leaf stalks the same height. They look a great deal like Jack-in-the-pulpits only with the petals flared backwards instead of folded over. The picture is a bit light - they are a darker green and a deeper burgundy interior.

It's growing well under my plant light right now, but I want to know its specific name so I can research and care for it better.

Very pretty! That could be some sort of crinum. Is the foliage a rosette? The hippeastrum/amaryllis forum has an excellent FAQ that gives good directions on the "float" method for hippeastrum seeds. And given your climate, just direct planting would probably be fine. Cover very lightly and keep moist - they take around a month to sprout.

That's pretty! Please don't be confused with how this plant (or any Dracaena I've tried so far) can grow in water (as lucky bamboo if D. sanderiana.) That doesn't mean it can tolerate a pot of constantly soggy peat. Dracaenas and parlor palms are sensitive to tap water chemicals. Distilled or caught rain water is good for those if possible. The pot in the upper right corner looks like it's sat in water in a drip tray repeatedly to get those hard water stains. That's not something appreciated by most potted plants, especially during the shorter, cooler days of winter, coming soon...

Lilies only bloom once per season. It is normal for the stems to brown and die. While the stems and leaves were green they were feeding the bulbs for next year. If you get a long enough period of cold weather in the winter your bulbs should bloom again next year just fine on their own schedule. These were probably forced for spring bloom. Lilies need a period of vernalization (cold treatment) to bloom the following year. I THINK it's about 6 weeks below 40 degrees, though I'm by no means positive. You may want to contact your local county extension office to find out if you have enough of a cold period for successfully growing lilies. Your extension agent or the local Master Gardeners should be able to help you.

Yes, looks like either Ipomoea hederacea or Ipomoea nil...both of these are most commonly a blue color There is even 1 leaf in the lower left of the 2nd photo that looks like (perhaps) either Ipomoea coccinea or Ipomoea hederifolia and these 2 species may have smaller blooms that are a reddish ,orange or yellow color... Please post a closeup of any flowerbuds when they develop and I can narrow the ID for you... Hope that helps... TTY,... Ron P.S. - Did you plant any MG's (?) or are the plants volunteers (?)

Don't panic when it disappears later in the year. It will reappear in due course. Just make sure that 'empty' pot of earth has a label.

Thanks everyone! I only found pictures of white, pink and red (no green) calla lilies on the web - there was my problem! I will label it and try to avoid the tiny voice in my head, but I'm very much under its influence in plant buying matters. lol

it is grown outdoors in my MI .... perhaps dug out for winter ... a full sun plant .... [its been decades since i grew them.. if i am wrong.. i will defer]

flower color is extremely variable indoors... based on how much light it gets ...

and when a plant defaults to green... it usually indicates that light is too low ... and if really starved for light.. it will not flower.. but just make more green leaves.. trying to survive ...

all that said.. perhaps it is a new varietal with green flowers... i dont know ... and such is suggested.. as one would expect that the grower did not ship a poorly growing plant that was starved for light .... this type of thing should not happen in weeks, since your voice instructed you to buy it.. lol ...

ps: dont know where you are.. but this would be a plant i would chuck outside once spring weather permitted... so as to fill it full of juice.. for next year... i would probably bring it indoors in mid fall ... after treating it for bugs ... most likely.. you can get all kinds of hints in the houseplant forum ...
